Herman W. Schultz Beloved father and Paw-Paw, Herman W. Schultz, 82, of Austin passed away Wednesday, March 2, 2005. Herman was born December 3, 1922, in Birch, Texas to Herman and Alvina Schultz. He was known around the Birch Community as Sonny. On March 1943, he entered the United States Army serving under Company H, 32nd Infantry Division, where he served his county proudly on the beaches of Okinawa, Japan. Herman received numerous World War II medals including: the American Theater Medal, the Atlantic Pacific Theater Medal with two bronze stars, the Philippine Liberation Ribbon, the World War II Victory Medal, one Overseas Service Bar, and the prestigious Purple Heart. On June 22, 1946 he married Mary Dene Schultz in Somerville, Texas. They moved to Austin in 1950, where the made their home. Herman was a member of Hope Lutheran Church and retired from the City of Austin Parks and Recreation Department in 1982, after serving 20 years of dedicated service. He loved to spend time on his farm outside of Caldwell tending to his cattle, fishing and hunting. His loving wife, Mary Dene Schultz, to whom he was a devoted husband for almost 58 years, survives him. Other surviving family members include: two daughters, Dianna Curington, and husband, Henry, of Austin; and Kathy Cornett, and husband, Reavis, of Austin; four grandchildren, Gregory Curington, and wife, Cheryl, of Austin; Jeffrey Curington, of College Station; Clint Cornett, of Austin; and Angie Nichols, and husband, Chad of Manor; and one great-granddaughter, Kaylie Curington, of Austin. He is also survived by his four brothers and sisters and one aunt. Edwin Schultz and wife, Delphine, of Bryan; Curtis Schultz, of Bryan; sisters, Esther Kizer, and husband, Emil of Austin; and Mavis Outlaw, of Bryan; Aunt Annie Poehl, 92, of Caldwell; his in-laws, J.W. Heine of Birch, Imogene Havemann of Birch, Johnny and Rita Kovar of Caldwell, Jesse Heine and Margie of Bryan, Erma and Richard Gaas of Bryan and many other loving family members and friends. The family wished to express their heartfelt gratitude to Dr. Madler and the loyal nursing staff of the V.A. Hospital in Temple for all of their love, care, and support they gave Daddy the past five years, May God bless them always. Serving as honorary pallbearers will be his grandchildren. Pallbearers will be his nephews, Randy Schultz, Matt Schultz, John Ruffino, John Kizer, Neff Outlaw, Ronnie Gaas, Dennis Havemann, Rick Houdek, Bill O Brien, James Junek, Cameron McCuller, David Latimer, and Layne Stevens. Visitation will be held from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m., Friday, March 4, 2005 at Cook-Walden Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m., Saturday, March 5, 2005, at Strickland Funeral Home, 400 S. Hwy. 36, Caldwell, Texas, (979) 567-1900, following a visitation starting at 9:30 a.m. Burial will take place at the United Church of Christ Cemetery in the Birch Community.
