Jack Rife Obituary

Jack Lynn Rife Jack Lynn Rife, 68, born in Graham, Texas, on October 9, 1941, died November 11, 2009, at home, almost 8 years after a stage 4 colon cancer diagnosis. His gallantry and spirit were inspiring. As a boy, Jack milked cows, helped on his dad's wrecking yard, and spent summers on farms in Michigan. A high school football and track star, he worked in West Texas oil fields to finance college. At UT, he did graduate studies in American Literature. Later, he studied Latin, Greek and Hebrew. He renovated houses, taught school in California, and wrote a novel. Jack was modest, discerning, eloquent, gracious, much loved and respected, whose unique humor brightened the lives of all. He leaves his beloved wife of 45 years, Susan Rife; son, Yitzak Rife (Sonia); daughters, Zoe Roach (Sean); Lexi Carney (Mike); Justine Rife (Ben); 4 grandchildren; his mother, Cleatis Rife; sister, Joyce, and niece Jackie. A memorial will be held on the 21st at his home. We carry him forever in our hearts.

Dear Susan and family,
I am so sorry to hear about Jack. As I was growing up,he made an impression on my life as a sweet caring uncle. Whether he knew it or not, he and Susan were role models to me,who never wavered in their beliefs or cared what others thought. Jack was one of the greatest men I ever knew, besides his brother, (my dad), Joe. My thoughts are with you as you get through this trying time.

Dear Susan and Family,

You and Jack have always been special to me, since we were neighbors on West 22nd Street back in the 60s. The last time we all had a good long visit was in Santa Barbara back in the 80s. Although we haven't been in close contact these last few years, I have had updates about you from mutual friends. My thoughts are with you.

Dear Susan and kids,

We are so sorry about Jack's passing. He was an inspiration to us all, a class act. He never gave up the fight and kept his dignity throughout. Having the loving support of all of you was the best medicine he received. We will miss his spirited discussions and advice over the fence. The elm tree in our back yard will serve as his monument.

Our hearts and prayers go out to all of you during this time. We are here for you wnenever you need us.
