Jerry DIXON Obituary

DIXON, Jerry Lavoy
Jerry Lavoy Dixon died Sunday August 2, 2015, following a long struggle with Leukemia. Born February 19, 1944 in Austin, the son of Jerrell D. Dixon and Mary Louise Dixon. Jerry graduated from William B. Travis High School in 1962 and married high school sweetheart Kay Dixon. Jerry and Kay celebrated 52 years of marriage June 14, 2015. Jerry's 3 favorite things in life were family, cars and camping. His future father-in-law, Roy Milton Eanes, recognized Jerry's skill for automotive repair and recruited him following high school as a service technician at Covert Buick on 5th and San Antonio Street. Jerry's unique love of people and cars led to the opening of Jerry Dixon's Automotive in Oak Hill the fall of 1974. Oak Hill was a thriving community and Jerry was at the heart of it all. The success and love of Jerry allowed him to expand his business into a second location specializing in classic cars, opening in 1985. Jerry put in his last full day of work at his shop Friday July 31, 2015, prior to his passing Sunday, August 2nd.

Jerry's love of a great adventure and story did not stop at cars. No day passed without a morning visit to the local coffee shop to catch up and share. Swapping stories at The Big Wheel was a daily requirement; following its closure, the crew moved to Jim's. A fly on the wall would hear stories of great adventures and tall tales to bring smiles on the faces of all his friends. Jerry combined his passion for cars and adventure by purchasing his first cab-over-camper in 1975. This addition to family recreation launched a tradition of family trips, stories and folklore. Jerry's happiest place on earth was in an RV park camping with all of his family and friends. Nothing made him happier than being behind the wheel of his motorhome leading the way to our next destination with family following behind.

Jerry dearly loved his family, including wife Kay Dixon, his sons Kevin Dixon and wife Teresa, Kelly Dixon and wife Alexandra, and his beloved grandchildren Aaron, Nathaniel, Lucia and Briana. Jerry is also survived by his brothers Erwin Dixon, David Dixon and wife Chris, and Mark Dixon and wife Lisa, along with numerous nieces and nephews.

Jerry will be missed by all.

The family will receive friends from 6:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M., Wednesday, August 5, 2015 at Cook-Walden/Forest Oaks Funeral Home. Funeral Services will be at 10:00 A.M., Thursday, August 6, 2015 in the Chapel of Cook-Walden/Forest Oaks Funeral Home with Reverend Joseph Calovic officiating. Entombment will follow at Cook-Walden/Forest Oaks Memorial Park Mausoleum.

Today it has been a year since you left us. I still miss you so much and do not ever think it will be any easier to accept that you are gone from me. I wish you would send me some signs that you are still around to help me through this rough time. I am so lost without you. We had been married 52 yrs and were high school sweethearts and were together 24/7. Now you are gone and I am so lost. Please help guide me until we meet again. I miss the future I was supposed to have with you.
All of my Love for you,
Kay

To my dear and precious friend, Kay: Jerry became our Hero in 1963 after his near fatal accident at Covert Buick. He lived because of his love for you. You gave him the strength and the courage to walk again. You and I met at Travis High. I was the more fortunate one because You accepted me as your friend. The feeling was mutual for me, too.

Jerry is now memorialized into Eternity and is in the arms of the Lord. May our Lord give all of you His Peace that surpasses all understanding. Carry on Jerry's legacy and remember that he is with you always. I love you, dear friend. Kaye Eskew-Bowman

I'm really sorry to have just heard of Mr. Dixon. He was a very nice and trustworthy man. Not only was he MY car repair guy but I sent my kids directly to him Many times I would just call him up and tell him I needed to know my daughters truck was safe and ready for her to go back to school. He was a wonderful man and I will miss him. My sympathies to his family. It was only a month or so ago he was joking with me at the counter of the shop.

Kay, Aaron and family...and to extended family...I just learned of Jerry's passing today and was so sad to have missed his service to celebrate a life well spent. We have always loved visiting with Jerry while maintaining the 'Hammack fleet.' I remember when Victor showed Jerry what YouTube was on the internet. We have shared the celebration of our joys and mourned our losses together and I and my family are deeply saddened by the loss of such a wonderful person. I hope you are surrounded by your family, faith and friends during this time of grief and healing. Grace & blessings from one of them. Love, Sherri, Victor, Hannah, Jacob & Meghan Hammack

Mrs Dixon, It was with a heavy heart that I read the paper this past Wednesday and saw of Jerry's passing. I spoke to him last week and he sounded in good spirits. I thanked him very much for all the work he had done for us over the years and let him know that the way he cared for our daughter's cars that it was like having their grandfather keeping an eye on them. He cared so much for everyone he met, it seemed that no one was a stranger to Mr Dixon. Our heart felt condolences to you and your family at this sad time.

Kay, Kevin, Aaron and family,
I am so sad and shocked to hear this news. I saw Jerry on Thurs the 30th. He was his usual upbeat and smiling self. We met in 1996 at Vic's and I really have enjoyed getting to know him over coffee. Even though I was a newcomer, he always made me feel welcome. I will miss his tails of the many characters of Oak Hill, the way it used to be in Austin, and his knowledge of cars. I met many good people through Jerry and am grateful to have had his friendship. My deepest condolences to all who will miss him. I certainly will.

After graduation we went our own seperate ways in life, and during a visit to austin to visit my south austin family i asked if anyone knew a good auto repair shopshop in Oak Hill who could be trusted, so who do i see when i arrived, Jerry!!!!!, we talked about old times, laughed, and were so happy that we had the opportunity to visit. Good friends are never gone until you forget them, that will never happen. Jerry, thanks for your part in my journey.
