Jimmy Chandler Obituary

Jim Chandler, a cherished figure in South Austin, passed away on April 13, 2024, after bravely battling pulmonary fibrosis. Born on January 2, 1945, in Burnet, Texas, to Dorothy and Loyce Chandler, Jimmy was known for his warmth and genuine care for others.

Jim's industrious spirit was evident from a young age, working multiple jobs while still in his teens. He served with honor in the Texas National Guard before embarking on a 35-year career with the U.S. Postal Service, becoming the youngest letter carrier in Austin at just 19 years old.

Jim made countless connections throughout his life, touching the lives of many. His generosity extended beyond personal interactions, as he dedicated himself to supporting various charitable causes and community organizations.

A man of diverse interests, Jim was an avid reader, sports enthusiast (Longhorns! Cowboys!), and loved playing games. He found joy in the simplicity of life, tending to his garden and relishing family gatherings filled with domino games and laughter. For many years, his home hosted the extended family's Christmas celebrations.

Jim shared a deep bond of companionship and care with his late wife, Shirley Raithel-Chandler. He is survived by his two children, daughter, Amy Chandler Kinkel and her husband Kyle Kinkel of Waynesville, MO, and son, DeRance Chandler and his wife Brandy Chandler of Lincoln NE, and five cherished grandchildren: Jake and Ashley Combs, Wyatt, Aidan, and Liam Chandler. Jim is also survived by his siblings and their spouses: Robert Chandler, Betty and George Mading, Burt Chandler, and Sherry and David Darvin, plus numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins, and his beloved aunt Ethel Ames.

A celebration of Jim's life will take place on Monday, April 29, 2024, at 10 am at Onion Creek Memorial Park, with a reception to follow at Bethany Lutheran Church.
