John Burr Obituary

(1944 - 2025)

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved John G. Burr, who peacefully departed this life on April 3, 2025 at the age of 80. John was born on April 21, 1944 in South Bend, Indiana. After a long and happy life, he ultimately succumbed to pulmonary fibrosis in Austin, TX, surrounded by his loving family.

John was a tenured professor in molecular biology at the University of Texas at Dallas. His research, teaching and students gave him joy, as did his Catholic faith. His life was enriched by his involvement with church men's groups and Bible study, his Broken Bow and other dear friends. Above all, he loved his family.

The oldest of 7 siblings, John was preceded in death by his parents, Irma Garrigan Burr and John G. Burr, Jr, and his siblings Elizabeth Burr and Sara Burr Renville.

John is survived by his wife, Sharon; siblings Kate Burr Oliver (Gil) of Chevy Chase, Maryellen Burr of Los Gatos, Mark Burr (Lisa) of Austin, Matthew Burr of Austin; children John Burr IV of Los Angeles, Jessie Burr Hockett (Andrew) of Austin, Ehren Woyt (Jill) of Big Sur; and grandchildren (Ava, Ryan, John V, and Orion); and many friends and extended family.

Funeral services will be held at St. Thomas More Catholic Church in Austin, TX on May 10, 2025 at 11:30am. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in his memory to St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Church in Richardson or St. Thomas More Catholic Church in Austin.

April 22, 2025

So sorry to hear of the loss of one of our dearest ACTS brothers. I remember John's favorite prayer:
"My Lord God, I have no idea where I am going. I do not see the road ahead of me. I cannot know for certain where it will end. Nor do I really know myself, and the fact that I think I am following your will does not mean that I am actually doing so. But I believe that the desire to please you does in fact please you. And I hope I have that desire in all that I am doing. I hope that I will never do anything apart from that desire. And I know that if I do this you will lead me by the right road, though I may know nothing about it. Therefore I will trust you always though I may seem to be lost and in the shadow of death. I will not fear, for you are ever with me, and you will never leave me to face my perils alone."

What a wonderful mind and what a beautiful soul.
Your Brother in Christ,
