John Gupton Obituary

John William Gupton John Wm. Gupton, 71, lost his hard fought battle with lung cancer on August 24, 2008 at home in Cedar Park. John was born Jan.15, 1937 in Aberdeen, WA. He was preceded in death by his parents, Winslow John Gupton and Bonnie Bentley Fullerton. John came to Texas while serving in the Army where he met Doris Newby, and married her on Dec. 21, 1963 in Temple, TX. In 1965 they moved to Austin and finally settled in Cedar Park in 1968. John helped start the CP Vol. Fire Dept. and was involved in early Cedar Park politics. He served many years on the Planning and Zoning Board for the city. John was a union carpenter before going to work for Leander I.S.D. Plant Services. In 1999 John retired after 21 years of overseeing the maintenance and construction of many new schools as the area exploded with growth. His first thoughts were always what was best for the "KIDOS" he served. John loved camping, traveling, meeting people and helping anyone he could along the way. After retirement he and Doris lived mostly in their travel trailer-a lot of it at Lake Georgetown where John was fondly known as "Mayor of Jim Hogg Park". He dearly loved his camping friends both locals and Snow Birds. John leaves behind his devoted wife; his son, David Dwayne Gupton and wife Leslie; daughter, Carla Renee Carver and husband Dave; honorary children, Kitty Sessler, Emily Vacha and Bryan Mullins and wife Cheryl. Grandsons, Corey, Austin and Clinton Gupton, and Isaac Carver also survive him, as well as granddaughters, Wendy Gupton Edwards and husband Trey, Lindsay and Lacey Ezzell, Sharon Martinez, Cristina Slonaker, Jacque Greenwood, Patti White, and Malorie and Natalie Vacha and 16 great-grandchildren; brothers, Charles Fullerton and wife, Marcey of Coos Bay, OR, Kenneth Dorland and wife Chris of Kapaa, HI, Guy Dorland and wife Diane; sisters, Maxine Barnett and husband Jacke and Barbara White all of Olympia WA, many nieces, nephews and friends. A celebration of John's life will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, August 29, 2008 at New Hope First Baptist Church in Cedar Park. The family wishes to thank the many people who have prayed for us during this time, the Drs. at Scott & White in Temple, Dr. Kumar Sathianathan, the absolutely wonderful Wesleyan Hospice Caregivers--especially Debbie, Tubbs, Martha, Cheryl and Pastor Steve. We are at peace knowing John has now met our LORD and Savior, Jesus Christ face to face, and joined granddaughter, Melinda Barnes in heaven on the 20th anniversary of her death. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the Wesleyan Hospice 508 Leander Rd. Georgetown, TX. 78626 or the New Hope First Baptist Church Building Fund, 200 New Hope Road, Cedar Park, TX. 78613. Doris and Family, Our thoughts and prayers are with you all at this very sad and difficult time. We are so thankful that we got to know you while camping at Jim Hogg many years ago. We considered you our "second set of parents". We have some of the best memories and our children (Amber and Spencer) still talk about those good times today. John will be greatly missed by everyone. He will always be remembered as the kind of person that would do anything for anybody. That's just the kind of person we remember him as. We are so sorry for all the pain and suffering that he endured. We really do regret not being able to come and visit with you like we just talked about last week after getting the last email from you. May God bless all of you and know that John touched our lives deeply.

Beloved John, your friends at Leander ISD remember you oh-so-fondly. You were at the front end of managing all this growth, and helped set the way for the many who follow in your footsteps. I am grateful for the individual kindnesses you gave to so many of us.

Our sympathies go out to your family. Rest in well-deserved peace, dear John.
