Kane Pierce Obituary

PIERCE, Sarah Kane Brown, known by most as Kane, died Monday, June 5 in Austin, Texas. Born in 1958 in Cleveland, Ohio she was a graduate of Hawken School in Gates Mills. She then matriculated to Wellesley College where she majored in economics and sang with the a cappella group the Wellesley Widows. Her career in sales began with IBM in Boston. In 1986 she married Glenn Arthur Pierce, Jr., also of IBM, and the two later moved to Texas where Kane founded three fine furniture and home furnishings consignment stores in Austin Furniture Brokers of Westlake, of Lakeway, and of Marble Falls. From launch in 1994, Kane owned and operated Furniture Brokers, initially writing her own management software. Kane served at the Lakeway and Travis schools as a parent volunteer. She was an officer of Austin's Newcomers and President of the city's Women's Tennis Association. For twenty years Kane captained the Lakeway Women's Tennis Team. She sang in the choir of West Hills Presbyterian Church and more recently was a soloist in the productions of "Lakeway Singalongs." Kane is survived by her husband Glenn and their daughter Remington Kane Pierce, a senior at Texas Christian University; her mother Martha Kane Brown, Savannah, GA; her sisters Allison Faircloth Brown (husband Geoffrey P. Miller), Palm Beach, FL; and Martha Dickey Brown (husband Jeffrey A. Libert), Cambridge, MA; and by Mr. Pierce's children, her blended family, Glenn Andrew Pierce (wife Meghan Sweeney), Sheffield, VT; Christopher Bryant Pierce (wife Melanie Gusler), Boerne, TX; and Ashley Pierce Harvey (husband Clint W. Harvey), Fort Worth, TX. She was predeceased by her father Edward Ansel Brown of Savannah, GA. A service will be held at Lakeway Church, 2203 Lakeway Blvd., Lakeway, TX 78734 on Friday, June 30 at 10:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent in Kane's memory to the Ovarian Cancer Research Fund (http://www.ocrf.org), to MD Anderson Cancer Center (https://gifts.mdanderson.org/), or to her church.

I write as a Hawken classmate of Kane. She made such a vivid impression--full of life, energy, good humor and warmth. I will never forget welcoming her to the Hawken Swim Team, the first young woman on the previously all-male team. It is so profoundly sad to learn of Kane's struggle with ovarian cancer and tragic death at such a young age. With deepest sympathies to Kane's family and a special hug to Mrs. Brown, our beloved teacher at Hawken.
