Kimberly GAMBARIN Obituary

GAMBARIN, Dr. Kimberly
Dr. Kimberly Jean (Aken) Gambarin, 46, passed away at home on July 25, 2016. Kim was born in Beacon, NY on December 24, 1969. She suffered for several years with Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy that began (for unknown reasons) after a second surgery on her shoulder. Dr. Gambarin recently retired and closed her medical practice, Hill Country Infectious Disease Consultants in Austin, TX. She is survived by her husband Dr. Semyon Gambarin, daughter Elena Kristine Gambarin, parents Bernard R. Aken, Jr. and Phyllis G. Aken ---all of Austin, TX. Her grandfather, Bernard R. Aken, Sr. of Munising, MI. is 98.

Accomplishments: *Child prodigy pianist recognized by Julliard and Mannes. (Born with perfect pitch.) *Graduated from Spackenkill HS, Poughkeepsie NY, May 1988. Was Salutatorian, NY Regents Scholar and an IBM Watson Scholar. Held many school leadership/officer positions and inducted into the Honor Society. Member and officer of the Thesbian Society. Was undefeated singles tennis player Junior year. Played the oboe in the school symphony. *Graduated from Cornell University, Ithaca NY, May 13, 1993, with a Bachelor of Science in Biogenetics. (Held club leadership positions such as Secretary and President of the largest club on campus, The Concert Commission.) *Graduated as a Doctor of Medicine from SUNY Stonybrook Medical School, Long Island NY, May 1998. Passed 4th year medical boards (US & Canada) in the 99th + percentile. *Completed medical residency in Internal Medicine as well as Fellowship in Infectious Disease at Baylor, Houston, TX. *Certified in Advanced Wound Care and Hyperbaric Medicine. *Earned a Kuk Sool Won martial arts Black Belt. Kim was self-driven and pretty much the best at whatever she tried.

In the end, however, no achievement was ever more important or dear to her heart than her daughter, Elena. In her last days, Kim's eyes just lit up when she talked about one of their recent excursions to the Cheesecake Factory restaurant and movie, "The Secret Life of Pets." She cherished the time they spent together.

A memorial service will be held at Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church, 3525 Bee Caves Road, Austin, TX on Sunday, July 31st at 1:00pm. Sweet and savory treats will be provided after the service. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church in Kimberly's name.

Dr. Gambarin,

I was a high school classmate of Kim's and my heart broke when I heard the news. Even back then, we knew that whatever path she chose, Kim would make the world a better place just by who she was, whether it was as a doctor or a veterinarian. While we were just classmates, I was thrilled to hear she had become a doctor and had a wonderful family.

I lost my husband in an auto accident two years ago and my heart goes out to you and your daughter for the journey you are on. I am so deeply sorry for your loss. Please know that you are not alone and there are other widowed out here help you navigate this roller coaster of a grief journey. Please feel free to reach out to me and I will put you in touch as needed.

I am sending you and your daughter a wish to find a little bit of peace today and hope memories bring comfort.

Kind regards,
Maggie Moore (Meg Nichols)

To the daughter of Dr Kim Gambarin: I must tell you how many times during your mom's medical rounds on my unit (I'm a nurse) we ended up talking about what your latest accomplishment was or what you were doing. Your mom was a brilliant infection control physician whose patients loved her, but first and most importantly, she was your mom.
I celebrate her life!

Sam & Elena,

I am shocked and my heart breaks to learn of Kim's passing. She helped me out with several patients while she still worked at South Austin Medical Center. What a huge loss and all too young. May she rest in peace and pain free. Our thoughts and prayers are with you and all of your family. May God grant her a place in his heavenly kingdom and may God give you the faith and peace in knowing that.

Dear Family,
My deepest condolences for your tragic loss. Dr. Gambarin was responsible for saving my son's life on more than one occasion. I loved her quirky way of sharing news about his health, but when I needed assurance, she was tender and caring. I know you will miss her and the medical community will miss her brilliant ability to provide care for patients with empathy and excellence. Prayers.

I grew up in Austin many years ago (Casis and O. Henry JHS) and still have many friends there. Now in my early 70s, I try to keep up with what's going on by subscribing to the electronic version of the Austin American-Statesman. I always turn first to the obituaries because those I grew up with are no longer young.

I never knew Dr. Kim Gambarin. However, I'm amazed at all she accomplished in unrelated fields of endeavor in her too-short life--medicine, music, tennis, acting, service to others, and being a Mom and wife. Clearly, her passing is a huge loss for her daughter, husband, and parents. But it's also a huge loss for the Austin community and, indeed, for our nation. I'm enormously saddened to read of the passing of one so selfless and with so much energy, drive, talent.

I hope that her daughter, husband, and family will accept my deepest heartfelt condolences about their loss. I'm very sad and will pray for all those who knew and loved her. She was clearly an unbelievably talented and giving human being. Our nation is in desperate need of more Americans like her.

Most respectfully--

Warren D. Miller, CFA, CPA
