Leland Smith Obituary

A shining light left this earth: L. G. Skip Smith completed his journey on November 22, 2022. Skip was born on September 16, 1945 in Terrell, Texas, to Leland B. Smith and Mary Johnson Smith. Skip grew up in Paris, Texas, came to Austin to attend the University, followed by UT Law School (sporadically), and only found his way out of town for exciting travels and his final sailing trip. Those of you who knew Skip are no doubt astonished to be reading this, for if anyone ever took care of themselves, it was Skip. Almost makes you wonder if you're not better off eating junk food and not bothering to exercise… Even if it didn't change his destiny, he always looked fit and much younger than his age, so maybe it was worth it.

Skip was a devout atheist but lived his life according to Christian principles. He was the most morally upright person you'd ever want to meet, full of compassion and generosity. Skip achieved what Matthew says a true Christian should be: in his heart and by his acts—not on his lips. Thus, God showed him favor by always opening up a parking place for him, even in the most desperate circumstances.

Of course, the luck of the atheist was the least of his good fortune. Skip was intelligent, handsome, and jovial. Always ready for a good time, he didn't know the location of Bummer Street. His good humor was infectious. A true raconteur—he regaled us with numerous anecdotes of his time working for Bob Bullock and with Student Travel stories about squiring rowdy coeds through Europe—a sharp wit, a performer of side-splitting imitations, Skip was cracking jokes on his death bed.

Skip also had his serious side. He was a hard-working, methodical person. He had a distinguished legal career, starting at the Texas Comptroller's Office under Robert S. Calvert and continuing under Bob Bullock. Skip was one of the original "Bullock Raiders" that busted the scofflaws that were not paying their State taxes. After his public service, Skip spent many years practicing at Clark, Thomas & Winters from which he retired. He earned the esteem of all who dealt with him.

Shady characters tended to lurk away from Skip, thinking he was a G-man. Skip was such a diplomat, and in a sticky situation, he's the one you'd send out to reason with the cops.

Skip lived for 77 lucky years. As luck would have it, Skip discovered, through a fluke of early detection, that he had pancreatic cancer and found the perfect doctor to keep the cancer at bay, thus allowing him to beat the odds and enjoy a last lap.

Another stroke of luck was meeting his soulmate. The most unlikely couple, Ed Delabarre was wrong for many reasons: astrologically misaligned planets, always grabbing the toothpaste by the middle, quick to cover up his failings with intellectual arrogance, and an absolutely terrible driver. Yet they enjoyed their shared interests for more that four decades of adventures, proving once again that love is much deeper than anyone imagines.

Skip is survived by his brother, Gary Smith, several nieces and nephews, and many good friends. He will be sorely missed by all who knew him. If there is a consolation, it's knowing that he lived life to the fullest of every second. Sail away, sweet spirit, you shall always remain in our thoughts.

A celebration of life will be announced later. Skip was a generous contributor to many charities. Please follow his lead and give to the charities of your choice.

went online looking to reconnect and was sad to learn I have lost the chance. We worked together at Student Travel and shared a few crazy stories. Grateful to learn of the satisfactions of his life after Europe.

Skip was my husband Jeff Smith's uncle!
I come from childhood of despair, abuse, and neglect. Which made being around people who have the opposite lives very uncomfortable!! I have a hard time around people in general! Never feeling wanted or good enough! But, Skip had a way of making me feel loved and cared about from the minute we met! He made me feel like I had known him my whole life! He always spent time trying to get to know more about me and special! He loved our son and my children from my first marriage! The world lost someone very special! We will miss him

Although I never had the real opportunity to to know "Skip" as closely as I wish I had ! . Being someone new to the family having married skips nephew Jeff Smith. He showed me so much genuine care and paid so much want in knowing as much as he could not only about me, but what makes me ~me... He made me feel like a part of the family! Which was a feeling he had no idea I was really suffering in my struggle to feel! I suffer ptsd from horrific childhood neglect and trauma and grew up very poor! Let's just say the complete opposite family dynamic than their family! But he not only accepted me unconditionally and my children also! He knew about my own battle with leukemia as well as numerous other things I must fight everyday just to feel I am any value to be alive ! He was so humble and passionate about the people and things he cared for I felt like I had known him my whole life! There have been very few people who have made me feel like I was wanted and , respected, and cared for not only as quickly as he did but especially as completely true and genuine as he did! I believe Skip's sense of humor and good energy he possessed that somehow just silently feeled the people around him will forever be treasure that this planet has lost!! When I speak to Our maker I will only ask that Skip know how much he meant to Jeff and my family! Some believe that atheists won't have a place in heaven ! I think that if someone like Skip won't be there simply on not truly having been given the evidence to prove otherwise! Then heaven isn't a place I want to go!! If evil souls get in simply by believing in Yeshwa and asking for forgiveness than I don't and all knowing , all loving, all seeing God would put such stupid petty black and white "rules " knowing all of what made us be exactly who we were until he takes us up! Don't put boundaries or put God in a box Or "a book"!! We can't even possibly grasp what God would do ! So stop acting like you do!

Skip was a great guy and I am very sorry to hear of his passing. He was the first attorney I met and worked with early in my 40 year career with the Texas Comptroller of Public Accounts. He was smart, quick-witted and even in some very serious situations could bring a bit of humor to the room. It was all business during work hours, but we did have some fun times after 5:00 p.m. My deepest sympathy to his family and to all who knew him.

I loved my uncle Skip unconditionally. I will have a hole in my heart forever. Just like my Mommy and Mini, never got to say goodbye. Love you so much and hope your lovely spirits fly like angels.

Skip was oh so competent as a skilled attorney. But more importantly he was a sincere, caring & devoted friend & colleague. Always fun to be around, he always had a funny story to tell & his quick witted humor left you feeling better. We are all fortunate to have been in his orbit.
Respect & love to all his family.
