M.K. Hage Obituary

Leader in education, real estate dies at 82 M.K. Hage Jr. 1925-2007

M.K. Hage Jr., an Austin community leader whose work in education and real estate have had an enduring impact on his hometown, suffered a heart attack Christmas night and died Thursday morning at Brackenridge Hospital. He was 82.

Hage, who was the principal at Mathews and Highland Park elementary schools, an Austin school board member and a real estate developer, was called a genius and a visionary by friends.

Hage developed the medical district around Seton Medical Center. His father, who immigrated to Austin from Lebanon, owned the property on Barton Springs Road where the iconic Armadillo World Headquarters held sway for a decade until M.K. Hage Jr. sold it in 1980. The sale ended an era in Austin music, but Armadillo founder Eddie Wilson credited Hage with helping the place survive as long as it did.

"M.K. can't help but go down as one of the major heroes in the Armadillo World Headquarters epic," Wilson said, adding that Hage's "tolerance in letting us get behind on the rent ... had an awful lot to do with us staying open."

But Hage also caused a furor in 1976 with a remark he made while serving as a founding board member of Austin Community College, prompting some minority groups to call for his ouster. He had said that an ACC committee should consist of a "black, a woman, a Mexican American and someone who knows what he's doing."

"He was a heck-raiser," said one of his daughters, Charlotte Hage Nacozy. Hage didn't worry about popularity, especially when he thought he was right, Nacozy and others said.

Hage opposed school desegregation, one of the more heated issues he faced during his 12 years on the Austin school board, which ended in 1980.

In 1973, he was among members who knocked on doors to win support to establish ACC.

"He used to call me at 6 in the morning when I was on the school board and he had some genius thought," said Carole Keeton Strayhorn, former state comptroller who served on both boards with Hage. "I had four little boys and was packing school lunches and he'd say, 'Turn off that disposal.' I had an extra long telephone cord because of M.K.

"He cared about every kid."

He donated money to the Seton Fund, the fundraising arm of the Seton Family of Hospitals.

"We call him the architect of the medical district," said Gene Attal, the fund's president.

Hage bought the land around 38th and 34th streets where the Seton Medical Center and office tower now sit. He built the tower in about 1970 and invited Seton, then located at 26th and Rio Grande streets, to move next door to the tower, Attal said. Hage also built Bailey Square day surgery center, one of the first of its kind in the nation, and the nearby Austin Doctor's Building, where he managed the property and worked until his death, Nacozy said.

"He was a big thinker," Attal said. "He came up with 10 terrible ideas, and the 11th one would be brilliant."

At the same time, "he was very humble and never tried to promote himself at all," said Dr. Bob Ellzey, a friend of Hage's and a retired radiologist who co-founded the Austin Radiological Association.

Hage loved riding horses and collecting art, some of which he donated to the University of Texas, where he earned a master's degree in educational administration, Nacozy said.

He also donated funds to UT to endow professorships in education and nursing.

His wife, Nettie Cecelia Shia Hage died in September 2006. In addition to Nacozy, he is survived by three other daughters, Patti Hage Hirsh of Austin, Robin Hage of Austin and Jennifer Hage Bond of Pacific Palisades, Calif.; and a sister, Christine Sidel of Santa Fe, N.M.

I had the honor of knowing M.K. over the last 11 years. He was my grandfather's, Joseph P. Hage's, first cousin. M.K. was one of the most remarkable individuals I have ever known. It was an honor to know him as my cousin. You truly touched my life and you will truly be missed.

I was a tenant of his on 812 E. 31st Street. I am so sad to see that he is no longer with us. He was a very inspiring man and had some wonderful stories to tell of his childhood. And, he loved good food. He will definitely be missed.

Dear Patti, Charlotte, Jennifer, and Robin,

I'm so sad to hear that your father (and my cousin) M.K. died. I enjoyed a long visit with him last year, and he was as funny and smart as ever. Your father was always very kind to me, and especially so at a particular time in my life when it really mattered.

May dear M.K. rest in peace.

Kindest Regards, John

Patti and Family,
My prayers are with you in the loss of your dear dad. "Mr. Hage" was my 5th grade teacher at Casis and I will never forget him. He spoiled us for all the teachers who followed by making school FUN and regularly telling us how smart we were. Then he demonstrated it by introducing us to algebra. Of course, this made math TOTALLY boring for the next 3 years!!! I am a better person and Austin is a better place because of the life of M.K. Hage.
With gratitude,
Carol Hawkins

My sympathy and love go to the Hage family. I didn't know Mr. Hage personally, but I did know Nettie who was a delightful person. I still think of her often. May the wonderful memories of Mr. and Mrs. Hage help heal the sadness you feel today. Most sincerely, Margaret Goodman

What an amazing family. I have heard so many wonderful stories about "Nana" and "Papa" from the Hirsh family. I'm so glad you can all be together during this time...Nana and Papa would be so proud of how you support each other as a family and wouldn't have it any other way.
Treasure and relish your memories.

Nettie and MK were loyal friends, fantastic neighbors, and kind, considerate individuals. MK kept me smiling for a considerable time after he dropped one of his witty comments. I'll miss both of them for years.

M.K. & Nettie were the sweetest neighbors and friends to Hugh and me. They cared about their community and were generous to all they encountered; from tamales at Christmas to donations to the Church and their favorite charities. I miss them both but comforted in knowing their girls will continue in their good works. A kind hearted, gentle and opinionated war hero and sweet man. Give our love to Nettie & MK too.

After leaving my own family Christmas celebrations, M.K. and "Nana" always graciously opened their home to me on Christmas day with their family. M.K.'s granddaughter, Sara, is my best friend and my thoughts are with her and her family. It's a tragedy to lose both M.K. and "Nana" so close together. They will truly be missed, they were two amazing people I am glad to have known.

I had the pleasure and the honor of knowing Mr. Hage through my work at the Austin Doctors Building. He and I shared many conversations about life, art, education, and business. One of my fondest memories is Mr. Hage laughing as a small group of us shared personal stories on a late summer afternoon. At each of our visits he encouraged me to seek more, learn more, and become more despite obstacles. He will be with me always...

I have fond memories of Mr. Hage walking into Bailey Square Surgery Center at 5:00am, grabing himself a cup of VERY strong coffee and standing at the nurses station visiting with me while I set up for the day. He was always so pleasant and full of life.
Mr. Hage also gave my oldest daughter her very first job. She had the opportunity to work in his office where he took the time to show her some of the ropes, advised her on her decisions about school and showed her that another adult (besides her parents)did care about her. Thank you Mr. Hage.
Sincerely,
Susan Vasquez R.N.

Our friend M.K. Hage was a strong supporter of education and benefactor of the arts, and his influence will continue long after his passing. News of his demise has brought a deep sense of personal loss. He was a true friend to all those who knew him well and benefited from his wisdom, generosity, and kindness.
