Ray Condra Obituary


Family-Placed Obituary

Ray Condra, 91, longtime Taylor businessman and religious leader, died Monday, May 10, 2004, in Johns Community Hospital. Mr. Condra was born in McDade to Mary Viola (Clark) and Leonard Tilden Condra on December 23, 1912. On October 10, 1936, he was married to Lillian ``Babe' Moore. In 1931, he came to Taylor after graduating from Nixon-Clay Business College. He was associated with Forwood Funeral Home and graduated from Dallas Institute of Mortuary Science in 1935. He soon acquired the funeral home, eventually becoming owner-president of Condra Funeral Homes, Inc. in Taylor, Round Rock and Granger for many years, until his retirement in 1969. As a director of First-Taylor National Bank since 1959, ha became vice president in 1971 and was active with the Taylor Chamber of Commerce, serving on the public relations committee. His was a strong voice in the Christian community on both local and statewide levels. In addition to filling the pulpit for various denominations, he was a founding member of Memorial Baptist Church, where he served on the Board of Deacons. He was a past president of District 15 Baptist General Convention of Texas, held a chair for many years on the board of trustees of Mary Hardin-Baylor, was longtime member and former chairman of Texas Children's Home at Beeville and Texas Baptist Children's Home in Round Rock, and was a member of the East Texas Chamber of Commerce public affairs committee. Mr. Condra was active in many capacities with the Taylor Rodeo Association, Taylor Kiwanis Club, and supporter of the local PEA and student projects. He was preceded in death by his parents, six sisters and four brothers. He is survived by his wife, Babe Condra; sister-in-law, Mattie Ree Noble, and devoted friends, Jodie and Trona Blaha, all of Taylor. Funeral services are scheduled at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday at Condra Funeral Home with the Rev. Dudley Marx and Dr. Paul Powell officiating. Burial will follow in Taylor City Cemetery. Pallbearers are Leroy Sigle, David Dedear, Ed Mayers, Lewis Sharpe, Melvin Stanley and George Sims. Memorial contributions may be made to Memorial Baptist Church, P.O. Box 90, Taylor. Services by Condra Funeral Home, Taylor.
