Robert Cherry Obituary

Robert G. "Bob" Cherry, Jr. Bob Cherry died Thursday, December 8, 2005, at St. Joseph Rehabilitation Center. He was born in 1914 in Elmina, Texas, to Florence Hughes and Robert G. Cherry, and raised in New Waverly, Texas. The middle of three boys, he was predeceased by his parents and his brothers, Tom and Fred. Bob held a B.S. from Sam Houston State Teachers College, and a M.A. from the University of Wyoming. He joined A&M College in 1943 as Assistant Registrar, then became a member of the Texas A&M Department of Agriculture Economics and Sociology. From there, Bob rose through the ranks of A&M administration to become Vice Chancellor of Public Affairs for the Texas A&M University System. Among his responsibilities were presenting the views and positions of the A&M System to the State Legislature. To many in Austin, he was known as "Mr. Texas A&M". Bob retired in 1984, having served in the Chancellor's Office for 23 years under five chancellors. Bob Cherry was an important figure in the history of Texas A&M University. In addition to his many friends, his family survivors are sister-in-law, Mary Nell Cherry, New Waverly, Tex.; nephews, Dr. Tom Cherry and wife, Milda, Littleton, Colo., F. Boyd Cherry and wife Zou, Houston, Tex.; nieces, Ann Cherry, College Station, Paulette Wells and husband, Mike, New Waverly, Melanie Underwood and husband Dan, New Waverly; and several great and great-great- nieces and nephews. The funeral service for Bob will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, December 13, 2005, in the chapel of Hillier Funeral Home, 2301 East 29th Street, Bryan, Texas. Burial will be in the family plot in New Waverly, Texas. Pallbearers are Ed Uvacek, Jimmy Brown, Donnis Baggett, Dan Underwood, Brandon Underwood and Randy Thrash. Honorary pallbearers are Fred Dollar and Ed Williamson. To honor Bob's lifelong commitment to education, contributions may be made in Bob's memory to the Robert G. Cherry Scholarship Fund. Checks should be made payable to the Texas A&M Foundation, and mailed to: Robert G. Cherry Scholarship Fund, Texas A&M University, Department of Agricultural Economics, 2124 TAMU, College Station, TX 77843-2124.
