Roger Sassman Obituary

Roger Wayne Sassman (78) of Austin, TX, passed away on February 26, 2025.

Born on October 9, 1946, in Austin to Earl Smith Sassman and Grace Mott Sassman, Roger spent his entire life living in the city he loved. Roger is survived by his daughter Stephanie Sassman of California, his sister Judy Sassman Kampert of Corpus Christi, TX, and sister Cindy Beach and her husband Greg Beach of Caldwell, TX, his former wife Gloria Sassman of Austin, TX, and numerous cousins and nephews. He also leaves behind a multitude of friends and large church family.

A fourth-generation Texan, Roger graduated from Del Valle High School in 1965 before enlisting in the Army and serving proudly in the Texas Army National Guard for 37 years. He retired as a Master Sergeant (E8), Communications Chief of the Headquarters State Area Readiness Command at Camp Mabry.

Alongside his military service, Roger dedicated 34 years to civil service as a National Guard electronic technician at Camp Mabry. He held Top Secret clearance and completed extensive training in advanced military electronics, graduating from numerous Army courses in radio, radar, night vision, missile systems, computers, and cryptographic equipment at various Army posts across the United States. He later completed numerous electronic security courses in civilian status in his role as an Electronic Security Technician for the State of Texas.

Roger had an unwavering passion for Texas Longhorns football, no matter how the team played. He held season tickets year after year, always eager to share the joy of the game with family and friends. His love for music, singing, and dancing brought warmth to those around him, and his kindness made everyone feel welcome. A natural handyman, Roger could build or fix just about anything and was still building workbenches, driving his pickup truck, and serving his church community until the very end.

His faith was a central part of his life, and he proudly served as a greeter and usher at the Williamson County Cowboy Church in Liberty Hill, TX. With a warm smile and a kind word for everyone he met, Roger embodied the spirit of fellowship and generosity. Though miles apart, he and his daughter Stephanie spoke nearly every day, cherishing their conversations and precious time together. He also found great joy in caring for his beloved furry companions.

Roger is preceded in death by his father and mother, Earl and Grace Sassman, and his brother-in-law George Kampert. His life was filled with love and service to his country, his family, his faith, and his Longhorns. He will be deeply missed but forever remembered. Hook 'em Horns!

A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, March 22, at 2:30 p.m. at the Williamson County Cowboy Church. In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting contributions to LUNGevity Foundation, the leading private provider of research funding for lung cancer at: tribute.lungevity.org/Roger.
