Mr. Zimmer was my supervisor when I first went to work as a probation officer in Travis County. He had a great influence on me as a young officer he taught me that gentleness is not a weakness but a great strength. I also remember doing "field visits" in Elgin around lunch time and he would "need" to accompany me, so after hunting down offenders we just had to go eat some brisket and sausage. I miss those days and I will miss Jim Zimmer.

I first came to know Mr. Zimmer in 1982 when I was assigned as a young prosecutor to the 147th District Court, presided over by the legendary Judge Mace Thurman. Mr. Zimmer was the court probation officer, meaning that he was in attendance at every court session, assisting the judge with information on probationers, their status, available probation programs, etc.
The word was that Mr. Zimmer had been a priest in a former life, and we all believed it must be true because of his kind and gentle manner. Judge Thurman, great man and great judge that he was, was not always easy to work for, as he could be quite demanding, to say the least. Mr. Zimmer handled it all with aplomb, and managed to not only keep Judge Thurman happy, but was always a joy to work with for all the rest of us as well.
Jim Zimmer was always gracious and helpful to a young prosecutor with a lot to learn, and I will always remember him with affection and gratitude.

Mr. Zimmer, I loved working for you and you kept a special place in many hearts after you retired. God must have needed another angel in heaven as you were an angel on earth.
