Stuart Inglis Obituary
(05/25/2003) Stuart John Inglis 1923 - 2003 On Saturday, May 17, 2003, Stuart John Inglis died peacefully of natural causes in Austin, Texas, in the presence of his three children. He was 79. He was born on December 14, 1923, in Van Nuys, California, to John Percy Inglis and Ruth Penfield Inglis. Mr. Inglis served as a lieutenant in the U.S. Marine Corps during WWII. He graduated from U.C. Berkeley with bachelor's and master's degrees in Astronomy. Mr. Inglis taught at Fullerton College, Grass Valley Union High School, Contra Costa Community College, Chabot College, the American School in Trieste, Italy; Sonoma State College, Medford Mid-High School, Las Positas Community College, and Southern Oregon State College. During his career, he taught astronomy, physics, math, and geology. Mr. Inglis wrote ``Planet, Stars, and Galaxies'', an astronomy textbook, and ``Physics: an ebb and flow of ideas'', a physics textbook. He participated in a number of science authoring and editing projects in New York and Florida. He was also a lecturer at the Morrison Planetarium in San Francisco and he participated in a solar eclipse expedition in the South Pacific in 1958. Mr. Inglis's deep love of nature, science, classical music, and his Scottish and Ojibwa heritages influenced all who knew him. He owned property in the beautiful southern Oregon countryside and enjoyed raising a few farm animals. He said many times, however, that his children were his greatest source of joy. His wife of 38 years, Elizabeth Eskildsen Inglis, and his, sister Margaret Inglis Merrill, preceded Mr. Inglis in death. He is survived by his son, Jeffrey Stuart Inglis, of California; his daughter, Adrienne Cecilia Inglis and her husband Dr. Emilio M. Torres, of Austin; his daughter, Jennifer Inglis Hudson, of Austin; and his grandchildren, Walter Inglis Torres, Martin Inglis Torres, Marisa Inglis Hudson, and Philip Inglis Hudson, all of Austin; his sister, Faith Imbach, of Alberta, Canada, his sister, Elizabeth Goetten of New Mexico; his brothers, Robert Inglis and David Inglis, both of Oregon; and his first wife, Elaine Inglis, of Massachusetts. The memorial service will be held on Saturday, May 31, 2003, at 11:00 a.m., at Westminster Presbyterian Church at 3208 Exposition Blvd. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to KMFA Classical 89.5, 3001 N.
