A friend of mine and a fellow patient of Dr. Stone's were just talking about her the other day! Speaking graciously and heartfelt we miss her to this day! She was one of those Angels that walked among us and taken too soon! I hope her family has found Peace with the loss of their Angel! But I am sure Dr. Stone is STILL an Angel among us! She lived an amazing life I will forever be grateful for her kindness and hugs! Miss you Forever! Love always, Amy

Dear Jack and Kate,
I went to medical school with your Dad and was blessed to meet and work with your Mom when we were both in our last year of residency at UT Houston. She served as our Chief Resident and was so knowledgeable, yet so humble. Our paths crossed multiple times after that when we were both working to improve the lives of persons with mental illness who found themselves in the criminal justice system. Your Mother was brilliant, but she was also kind, compassionate, and was an undaunted advocate for those with mental illness - everything a doctor should be. I last saw her when she visited our hospital about two years ago. She spoke of the two of you, and how blessed she felt to have you and your Dad in her life. My heart broke when I learned of her passing. Jim, you have my deepest sympathy. I know there are no words to describe the magnitude of your, your children's, and Susan's family's loss. May God be with each of you as you mourn.

I'm so glad I had the chance to work with Susan. She was one of my favorite colleagues. Years ago I asked Susan to speak in my son's seventh grade class because they had expressed interest in learning about mental illness. She agreed as a favor to me, I'm sure, but she told me that educating younger students was important to her to help erase the stigma related to mental illnesses. She will be greatly missed. My thoughts and prayers are with her family today and always.

Susan, was one of a kind. A dynamic, kind, intelligent, beautiful, caring soul, and a gifted musician. I worked with her in the mental health field and played music with her and Jim. Not only is her passing a loss for her family, friends and colleagues, but to the disenfranchised who benefited from her dedication in making her ideals reality. She touched many who did not even know her, or that it was her actions which changed their lives. And for those of us who did know her, the loss is staggering.

We have watched over the years as Susan tackled missions many only talk about. To meet her was to admire her, but the more you knew Susan, the more she inspired awe -- how she accomplished so much with such kindness, grace, humor, and brilliance. Her incredible work with attorneys, clients, organizations, and systems will live on but it is not possible to comprehend how much she will be missed. Our prayers are with Jim, Kate, and Jack.

I am struck by Susan's ability to integrate compassion in direct care with her passion for systemic improvement and her intellectual capacity to get the job done. She has truly affected the lives of many directly, through the Mayor's Mental Health Task Force, through changes in Texas Code, and through advocacy for service system improvements. She's been an inspiration for me and I will miss her influence. My thoughts are with her family and friends.

Please accept the humble condolences from the Bastrop County Criminal District Attorney's Office. Susan was always an expert witness with integrity whether she was testifying for us or against our cases. Her work as a psychiatrist helped see that justice was done in so many cases. My heart goes out to her husband, children and family/friends.

Since 2000, Susan played a huge role in helping the Houston Police Department build a very succesful CIT program. Since that time she continued to work closely with HPD, as well as police agencies all over the state of Texas, on improving law enforcement response to persons with mental illness. I was fortunate enough to work with her over the last 18 months to make important changes to the mental health code. Her impact in this area of law enforcement will be felt for generations to come. She was truly one of a kind and will be greatly missed.

Jim, Jack and Kate,
Some people spend their lives striving to help others, and though I was only ever fortunate enough to spend short amounts of time with Susan, it was always so clear that she fell in to this category of 'person'; a person who would always try to do the right thing, because it was the right thing to do.
I am deeply sorry to hear this news and I know that you will be able, in time, to celebrate your wife and mom for being this amazing person.
Deepest Sympathies,
Sherri Hammack

What a tragic loss to our community of system change agents within the mental health arena! Susan was always willing to assist with efforts to improve the service system for children and youth with mental health challenges and their families, within local communities and at the state level. She will truly be missed.

Dr. Stone was my hero! Together with Dr. Andrew Silverthorn, they literally saved my life, prescribing the appropriate medication for my PTSD and Anxiety disorder. Always giving me hug after our sessions, she made me feel whole again. My admiration for her was boundless, yet she was humble in her vast abilities in medicine and the law. She will be greatly missed! Rest in Peace dear Dr. and Friend! God's Peace! Sincerely, Amy Pavone
