Thomas Hubert Obituary

Thomas "Tom/Tommy" Louis Hubert, longtime resident of Round Rock, passed away peacefully on Saturday, July 29, 2023, at his home after a brief battle with cancer. He was surrounded by loving family. A celebration of life will be planned and announced at a later date.

Tom was born July 15, 1954 in Austin, TX, to Louis Frank and Patricia Tom (Johnson) Hubert Jr. After the tragic loss of his parents and little sister Stephanie Suzan when he was thirteen years old, Tom was raised by maternal grandparents V O and Sybil (Bosley) Johnson who have since passed. V O moved the family to Chelsea, Michigan, where Tom attended Chelsea High School and competed in wrestling and honed his mastery of the trombone which he began playing as a child. He had a brief stint as a painter of water towers! Tom was a proud Eagle Scout. He attended: University of Michigan-Ann Arbor; North Texas State University (now University of North Texas-Denton) where he was as a member of the One O'Clock Lab Band; and Navarro College-Corsicana. Tom wrote and co-wrote several songs, sang and played keyboards and bass as half of the Doug/Thomas Duo at The Quarter Deck in Port Aransas, TX. He was vocalist and bassist with The Yahoos in Corpus Christi, and played with various other local artists during the mid- to late 1980s. After moving to Austin, he worked in landscaping, as an electronics tech, for DeCoty Coffee Co, and continued to perform with various acts, including Vicky Fowler and Friends at the Texas Folklife Festival. One of his proudest professional experiences was performing with the First United Methodist Church choir (Round Rock) at Carnegie Hall! His latest work was as a member of Stone Bone Country and as half of Kimo Sabe.

In addition to parents, sister, and maternal grandparents, Tom was also preceded in death by paternal grandparents Louis Frank and Lillie Mae (Wood) Hubert Sr, uncle John Ron Johnson, and uncle Kingsley Wood Hubert. He is survived by: the love of his life and wife of 42 years, Susana "Sue/Susie" Castillo; son Tommy Dale and Hilary Hubert; son David Patrick Castillo Hubert; two grandchildren; uncle Don and Karen Johnson of Tulsa, OK; uncle Ronald Joseph Hubert of Pasadena, TX; aunt Caryl Hubert of Seabrook, TX; aunt Sharon Hubert Johnson and Henry of Grand Junction, CO; and numerous cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends.

The entire family extends thanks to the doctors and nurses of Baylor Scott and White Health of Temple and Round Rock and to Gilead Home Health and Hospice for their care.

Never know where to start with these, but they say "So long as they speak your name, you shall never pass" and none of us were or are ready for that.
Though Uncle Tom and Aunt Susie live miles away when we were growing up you always knew when he was around, every room just came alive when he was there. He was a person you loved being around and listen to. He loved talking, and was just as good at listening. He was vibrant when he did so, whether talking of his band, his records or his family. A wonderful man who wasn't afraid of letting you know he cared and loved, and he loved hard; the way he looked or embraced my aunt, it was one of few great men to emulate on how to love and show it.
To Uncle Tom: I wish we could have finally seen you play, and seen more of you before you left us; but I suppose beautiful things in life are to be glimpsed. And you were an amazing glimpse in my life. Thank you for being another role model on how a man should be with his wife and the enjoyment you showed this life, I will miss you inherently. Please tell Grandpa and Grandma I miss and love them as well, I hope to earn my place among incredible people God bestowed upon me in this life. I love you Uncle Tom
