Thomas McCrummen Obituary

Thomas "Tom" Dodson McCrummen, Jr. Thomas "Tom" Dodson McCrummen, Jr., age 77, passed away Thursday, March 3, 2011. He was born in Austin, Texas on February 1, 1934 to Thomas D. McCrummen, Sr. M.D. and Elizabeth Wroe McCrummen. Tom was married to Marian Marley on June 26, 1954. Tom was educated in Austin Public Schools, graduating in 1951. He then went on to attend the University of the South, Sewanee, Tennessee, 1951-1953; the University of Texas at Austin, 1953-1955, graduating with a BBA in Finance; and Southwestern Graduate School of Banking, graduating in Class 1, 1960. Tom also served in the U.S. Army Reserves 1953-1961. He began employment with the American National Bank of Austin in1949, was elected Vice Chairman of the Board in 1975, and retired in 1979. After his retirement he organized and opened American International Traveler, and served as its President. Tom held many positions on various boards in civic and public service including: Member of the State of Texas Securities Board, 1966-1970; Austin Chamber of Commerce, including serving as president in 1969; Austin Bicentennial Commission, 1976; and the Capital Area United Way, Board of Trustees, 1978-1985. He served as President of the Austin YMCA, Austin Natural Science Association, Admirals Club, and Capital Area United Way; served as Chairman of the Southwest Texas Educational Television Council (KLRN and KLRU); served as Director or Trustee of the St. Andrew's Episcopal School, University of Texas Development Council for the School of Communications, and the Austin Heritage Society. Tom also served as a delegate to the National Democratic Conventions, 1964 and 1968 and as Chairman of Travis County Delegations, State of Texas Democratic Conventions, 1966-1968. He was the past Vice Commodore of Austin Aqua Festival. Tom thoroughly enjoyed the association with his friends in E.I.E.I.O. He was an avid sports fan and enjoyed hunting and the outdoors. Tom was preceded in death by his parents and a son, Thomas Dodson McCrummen, III. He is survived by his wife, Marian; children, James Gilbert McCrummen and Claire Elizabeth McCrummen; daughter-in-law, Ann McCrummen of Fredericksburg; and his grandchildren, Stephen Coleman McCrummen and Andrew Thomas McCrummen of Fredericksburg. Services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Monday, March 7th at St. David's Episcopal Church, 301 E. 8th Street, Austin. Interment will follow at Hornsby Cemetery. Honorary Pallbearers will be, Robert C. Duke, Joe T. Jerkins, Robert K. Moeser, George H. More, III, Tom Prud'homme, John Sherman Strance, Ken Koock, William A. Wroe, Jr. MD, Ed Rhodes Wroe III, Judson Wynn Wroe, Frank M. Covert, MD, Michael Dailey, Robert H. Pfennig, and Robert F. Silvus. Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice Austin, St. David's Episcopal Church, or a charity of your choice.
