Wayne Laitala Obituary

May 30, 1949-March 27, 2025

Wayne Michael Laitala, 75, of Austin, TX passed away at his home after a battle with leukemia. Wayne was born in Minneapolis, MN to Wayne and Edith Laitala. He moved with his family to Scotch Plains, NJ at the age of 7. Wayne attended Lehigh University graduating with dual degrees in Electrical and Mechanical Engineering. While at Lehigh, he lettered in both soccer and baseball. He was a member of the Delta Upsilon fraternity. Wayne later received a Master's degree in Physics from the University of Texas at Dallas.

In 1975, Wayne married Patricia Thompson Laitala. Together they had two sons, Michael Neils and David Thompson. Wayne worked as a systems engineer at Rockwell International in Richardson, TX for 34 years. He was active in playing softball and enjoyed coaching his sons in soccer and baseball. He lovingly spent hours watching his boys compete at swim meets.

Upon his retirement in 2007, Wayne and Pat moved to Austin to the Thompson family home which became an anchor for the Laitala family. Traveling was Wayne's favorite hobby. They visited several continents and many countries on his wish list.

He is survived by his wife Pat; son Michael and wife Bridgette Rhoades Laitala; son David and wife Susan Walker Laitala, and their daughters Walker (9) and Ruby (6); and his sister Marcia Weaver. He was preceded in death by his parents, brother Richard Laitala and sister Sandra Donahue.

I was a co-worker of Wayne's for over 20 years. I enjoyed working with him. I was part of a lunch get-together group with several other retiree's. Wayne would come up to the Richardson/Plano area once or twice a year for the lunch that he usually organized. We'd spend several hours discussing old times. Every time I 'd walk into the lunch restaurant, Wayne was there at our usual corner booth and he'd get a big grin on his face when I walked in. Sure will miss him. I just have to accept this is just part of getting old.
