Wayne Sorensen Obituary

SORENSEN,
Colonel Wayne Bert
Colonel Wayne Bert Sorensen, US Army, Retired, Ph.D., left this life of love and service on 18 February 2015 in Austin Texas.
Born September 15, 1942 in St. Paul, Minnesota, to Violet (nee Burlingame) and Bert Sorensen, Wayne earned his bachelor's degree in Business Administration at the University of Minnesota in 1965. He entered the Army as a Medical Service Corps officer, served in Vietnam 1966 to 1967, and served in medical units in Germany, Korea, California, Oklahoma and Texas. He earned his Masters in Health Care Administration at Baylor and his PhD at the University of Iowa. In the 1980s, Sorensen was an Associate Professor and Director at the U.S. Army-Baylor University Graduate Program in Health Administration, San Antonio, Texas. His last assignment in the Army was as the Executive Officer to the Chief of Clinical Services, 7th Medical Command, Heidelberg, Germany.
He retired in 1992 and began a second career as a sought after consultant and University professor. He consulted for the Association of University Programs in Health Administration and the Commission for Accreditation of Healthcare Management Education, preparing accreditation policies and procedures and evaluating academic programs throughout the United States and overseas. He continued a distinguished academic career on the Health Care Administration faculty at Texas State in San Marcos where he was Associate Professor and also Chair of the Department for ten of 17 years. While there he continued to work to improve health care overseas, representing Texas State on assistance visits to Kazakhstan, the Republic of Georgia, Uzbekistan, and the Ukraine.
In 2010 he was recruited as the first Director of Health Care Administration for Concordia University in Austin, where he found passion inspiring young Christian leaders. He is the recipient of many awards, including the Army Legion of Merit and the Gold Medal Award from the American College of Healthcare Executives in 2008. He loved teaching and mentoring and considered his professorship and his relationship with his students as his true calling. He was a member of several medical, management, and hospital professional associations and served on the editorial board of several professional publications. Wayne was active in charity work, most notably with his wife, Genie, in supporting the Down Home Ranch in Elgin, Texas.
Wayne was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his wife, Genie, daughters Teresa Barker, Mary Barfield (Rick), Alexandra Holcomb (James) and grandson (Robert Barfield), Heike Lange; sisters Faith Seng (Richard) and Doreen Atchison (Jack), two loving Godchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

I met COL Sorensen approximately 30 years ago, when I served as the secretary for HCAD. Wayne eventually became the prog dir for the USA-Baylor Program. He had such a great sense of humor, and was always there with a smile and a joke. I was saddened to read of his passing, but he touched many lives! I found an old photo of him, probably at one of the graduation dinners of the Army-Baylor Program. RIP Wayne Sorensen

Dr. Soresnen was always a bright spot in my time as an MHA student. He was my advisor and mentor and I will always be endebted to him for his guidance. Earth lost a great soul but heaven gained another angel. I am comforted that he was strong in his faith--something we discussed a few times while I was a student. I will miss him terribly.

Wayne was a beautiful person shining with intelligence and good humor--kind, thoughtful, a great conversationalist, and a gentle scholar. He was something of a scamp, too.

Wayne was a courageous patriot who loved his country with every fiber of his being. During the Vietnam War, American soldiers were among the first to benefit from his compassion and expertise in health administration.

Wayne loved his soldiers, and when he turned to academe, he brought that love to his students. He absolutely loved teaching and those he mentored are passing on gifts they received from Wayne to countless others.

Needless to say, he was a wonderful friend, generous and gracious. How we will miss him. Our hearts go out to Genie and the family.

Wayne befriended when I started full time at Concordia, helping me get acclimated to Concordia. We spend time talking about military experiences and about our encore careers. We are both retired veterans. He was an encourager, a planner, a confidante, and a humorous guy. I expected that God would allow him to return to Concordia. Sadly, He let Wayne slip away. I am sad...

With the heaviest of hearts, I express my heartfelt condolences to the Sorensen family, as well as the CTX ADP family. Professor Sorensen was truly a gem and loved by all that were graced by his acquaintance. He is a LARGE part of what motivated me, as one of his students, to continue on in my studies. The silly videos, pictures, his smile and wacky sense of humor made coming to the HCA four-hour-long-classes worthwhile. His knowledge of all things HCA encouraged my quest for knowledge, as well. I know I would not have made it this far without him. If you have ever heard me speak of Professor Sorensen, you were likely to hear me say these words "It is not often you think and speak of someone and say, THAT is a truly good man". Wayne Sorensen was a good hearted man; a truly good person. I hope he knew that his students loved him dearly and how much he touched our lives. The HCA program will not be the same. Professor Sorensen, I am disappointed that I didn't complete my studies so you could see me at commencement, but I know you will be there in spirit and with me in my career as an healthcare administrator, knowing that I was educated by the best. To the family, be blessed in knowing that he is at rest with the Father but he will always be with you, too.

Dr. Sorensen was a gentle man, with great patience and concern for his students. He taught us more than Health Care Admin. He was a favorite instructor and we (his students) so wanted him to attend our class banquet that we practically twisted his arm to attend, even though, and perhaps because, he was going through a divorce at the time. Then, in reward for his attendance, and in the pure poor taste reserved to well-meaning college students, we provided a date for him by dressing up a medical manikin in ladies clothing and putting her in a wheelchair placed beside Dr. Sorensen's seat. He kept his sense of humor, smiling through it all, and even participated in the toasts to the happy couple. Best of all, instead of getting even in the classroom, he was even more patient, if that were possible. When I finally admitted my part in providing his date, asking his forgiveness, he gave that shy smile and frankly forgave me. I always liked him before that, loved him after that. Dan: just one of his students.
