William BENSON Obituary

BENSON, William Dixon
William Dixon Benson (Dick Benson) died at Saint David's - Austin on Friday January 13, 2017 due to complications from Type 1 Diabetes. He was 67 years old.
Dick Benson was born on March 25th, 1949 in Dallas, Texas to William E. and Lee Benson. In 1972 he graduated from the University of Texas in Austin with emphasis in Psychology and Philosophy. Dick was the Student Body President at the University of Texas during the Vietnam war. Dick married Judy Ryser in 1974 and had three sons William Nicholas Benson, Jeffrey Dixon Benson, and Will Edward Makana Benson.
Dick worked as a General Contractor with his father as Architect on several projects. The duo completed both commercial and residential projects. Dick went on to partner and develop more complicated commercial projects and found his niche in the development of CATV systems in Central Texas. But, first and foremost, Dick Benson was a father.
Dick was the first one to tell a joke (not always an appropriate one), and dabbled in lymrics, cigars, fine scotch, and rock-n-roll.
The man cherished his boys and his many friendships, and among these, he shared his love and intense intellectual curiosity.
Dick was deeply cared for and the family will be eternally grateful to Jeanne Plassman, Perry Lorenz, Sam Griswold, Chris Cooke, Maya Pruett, Robbie Clark, the Caudillos, Amanda MacLean, and the many friends at the Brookdale Community.
Dick is survived by his sister River Benson and his son Jeff Benson. He is preceded in death by his father William E. Benson, his mother Lee Benson, and his two sons Nick and Will Benson.
There will be a celebration of Dick's life on Wednesday January 18, 2017 at 1 pm at Mercury Hall, 615 Cardinal Lane, Austin, Texas 78704. All are welcome to attend and celebrate Dick's life. In lieu of flowers, donations to the America Diabetes Association would be appreciated.

Sending prayers and blessings to Dick's family. I only knew Dick for a short while, but he lifted my spirits when I really needed a friend. He will not be forgotten.

My dearest friend, I have so much to tell you and yet, my words fail me. We had such good times together and so many sweet memories. I remember the cool Austin evenings when we grilled dinner on the deck, had a glass or two of Wellers and talked until the early morning about philosophy, life and the beautiful people who graced our lives. We told jokes and laughed at all the silliness of life none of which we took too seriously. Those were the best days in Austin. You loved your children, cherished your friends and lived life every day with joy and enthusiasm. You were truly an exceptional, unique and much loved friend. I'm missing you, but I have the memories of our happy times together, and that will remain forever. Good by my dear friend, and may God grant you peace. I'll see you on the other side Demetri Vacalis

I worked for Dick in the late '70s. He was very good to me and a fine man. Good memories. TJ Johnston.

Heartfelt condolences to Dick's family. River, I was thinking of you and Dick and your parents the other day, remembering all the fun we had in the beautiful home your Dad built on Montwood, watching the tadpoles in the pond, having sleep-outs in the back yard, our Beatlemania!.....So sorry we lost touch. Blessings and love to you all.

Dick, we had some really great laughs and stimulating conversations about almost everything. You had an awesome bright mind. I am truly sorry for losing touch the last few years. Many of us will miss you. Happy Trails. All my best. Richard Maier

The friendship you shared with my mother and father while living in Westlake (Austin) was cherished. They loved spending time with you debating all the worlds events late into the night. As an adolescent I watched and admired the special bond you three had for each other and family. You were and still are influential to those you touched with your wit, humor and intellect. We have lost a special and dear friend in your passing and pray for your family and you.
