Yari Mokri Obituary

Yari Mokri Yari Mokri, 26-year old Pflugerville resident, was killed in action in Hawijah, Iraq on Wednesday, December 6, 2006. He was born in Grenada Hills, California on June 11, 1980 to Mohammad and Donna Mokri and is the second of three children. His family moved to Austin in 1983, where Yari attended school in Austin ISD, and later in Pflugerville ISD. Yari graduated from Pflugerville High School in 1988, where he was a dedicated varsity soccer player, cross-country runner, and member of the German Club. Upon high school graduation, Yari attended Texas State University and graduated in May 2005 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Criminal Justice. One month later, he joined the U.S. Army and was assigned to Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri for basic training. Yari chose counter-intelligence as his MOS and received advanced training in this field at Fort Huachuca, Arizona. In January 2006, he was stationed at Schofield Barracks in Hawaii. He deployed in August and began an elite training program in Germany before arriving in Kirkuk Province, Iraq in September. Yari was assigned to 3rd Battalion, 25th Infantry Division. One of Yari's life passions was the sport of soccer. He began playing as a small child, and never put the ball down. After high school, he joined the Austin Indoor Soccer League, where he played for several years. As an American Soldier in Iraq, Yari enjoyed playing soccer with Iraqi Soldiers. Yari told his family that his teammates in Iraq played barefoot, and that one day he planned to give his own shoes to one of them. In addition to his love for soccer, Yari had an appreciation for music of all kinds. He played the trumpet in the junior high band, and quickly developed an interest in a wide range of instruments, including guitar, drums, and keyboard. Yari filled up two bedrooms in his parent's home with his collection of musical instruments, and could frequently be heard strumming an electric guitar or drumming his trap set. Yari discovered early that he wanted to work in law enforcement, either at the local of federal level. He spent several years as an intern in the Austin Police Department Homicide Unit. This experience led him to pursue his career goals, and his decision to join the U.S. Army in its counter-intelligence division was the first step down this path. Yari was simply contagious. He had a positive attitude that rubbed off on others, even in the most trying of times. In Iraq, he recently told one of his commanders, "Sir, I hope you have a great day because it's a great day today." Yari's smile was the sunshine on a cloudy day. He was known for his humor and was never afraid to express himself through SNL cast impersonations and could carry on a conversation in movie quotes alone. Yari's loved ones include his wife Andrea, who he recently married in a private ceremony before his deployment, and her two children, Trey and Abby; his parents Mohammad and Donna; his brother and sister-in-law, Maziar and Christine along with his niece, Kaeli and nephew, Maziar; his sister, Desiree; his maternal grandparents, Franklin and Elisabeth Bowman of Carthage Missouri; his paternal grandmother, Zahra Mokri of Kermanshah, Iran; and a loving network of extended family and friends. Funeral Services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday at Cook-Walden/Capital Parks Funeral Home; 14501 N IH 35 in Pflugerville. Committal services and interment will follow at Cook-Walden/Capital Parks Cemetery in Pflugerville. The family asks that in lieu of flowers, memorials be made to the Yari Mokri Memorial Scholarship Fund, c/o Pflugerville High School; 1301 W. Pecan, Pflugerville, TX 78660. An online tribute is available in Yari's memory at www.MeM.com. You may visit his website, sign the online guestbook and leave individual remembrances.

As a retired educator who taught Yari's buddy, SPC Strong, many years ago, I suggest who better than Yari, a scholar / athlete and one of Uncle Sam's finest, to be chosen to inspire future generations of young people, especially in a community that has had such a long association with the military. Thank you Suzanne, Gilbert and David for opening Yari's Guest Book again this week and reminding me to post this.

Reading your kind words prompts me to tell you about Yari's mom's personal project to honor her son, in case readers here have not heard.

http://www.asoldiercomeshome.com/ is not only a simple but poignant tribute to one of Uncle Sam's finest, Yari, but also a small volume that needs to be circulated to families with young kids who are having to cope with deployment or, sadly, the ultimate sacrifice.

So, knowing this, I hope readers will be creative and find ways to get this little volume out there far and wide - all part of honoring a guy whose memory will live on in many hearts, while helping other families get through their own personal tragedies and challenges when a son or daughter, parent or spouse joins the military and goes to war.

With Memorial Day coming up, what better way than to donate a copy of the book to your local school, library or read it at a public event ?

Meanwhile, here in Irvine, California we continue with pride to let the Nation know we will never forget the ultimate sacrifice of American families, like my friends the Mokris.

Look for an updated website soon for the Northwood Gratitude and Honor Memorial and know that residents in my city will never forget the fallen heroes of Iraq and Afghanistan. If in Orange County, you can visit the space which is always open at Northwood Park for people to come pay their respects, find a loved one's name and say a prayer on this hallowed ground. It was the cumulative effort of veterans from many wars as well as residents like my friends and I who reach out in many ways to support military families.

Also, I am touched to share that my young Afghan friends who are a world away from their homeland where their father, a doctor and university professor, was murdered by the Taliban over a decade ago while working with the UN refugee program, as well as some very new neighbors from Iraq who gained political asylum after similar horrors, came at the dedication last year, to quietly stand beside Americans to show their gratitude to the nation and to honor the sacrifice of the families of our fallen, even when their hearts are heavy from their own personal tragedies, as well as them facing daunting challenges to start new lives in the land of the free, while being far from loved ones and their homelands.

Yari: Yesterday, May 2, 2011, was very historic in that Bin Laden was killed at last. My first thought was of you. But, then, most of my thoughts regarding the war on terror are of you and your family. If given the choice, I would rather have you back, than Bin Laden dead. His death is a pyschological victory, but it doesn't bring you back. Nor does it bring back the thousands who have died because of him. My thoughts of you and your family remain the same, as they always will.

In Memory of Yari ~ (Debra Estep)

December 6, 2008

Holding you all in my thoughts and prayers.

The Wind on The Downs

“I like to think of you as brown and tall,
As strong and living as you used to be,
In khaki tunic, Sam Brown belt and all,
And standing there and laughing down at me.
Because they tell me, dear, that you are dead,
Because I can no longer see your face,
You have not died, it is not true, instead
You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe;
I hear you laughing as you used to do,
Yet loving all the things I think of you;
And knowing you are happy, should I grieve?
You follow and are watchful where I go.”

(Written by Marian Allen during World War l )

Two lines that I wish you to keep near your heart…….

“You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe”

I did not know Yari, but I am remembering
his service and sacrifice. He is my hero. !

The Other Side

i'm over on the other side
where life and death softly divide.
left my skin and bones behind
now i'm over on the other side.

can you feel me there with you?
my breath is gone but i'm not through.
loved you then and i still do
from over on the other side.

i can fly. really fly.
below the earth ... all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

it's good here on the other side.
the sweetest songs...the bluest skies.
thank you for the tears you cried
but it's good here on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth...all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side

the world is smaller than a needle's eye.
where life and death softly divide.
when you leave your skin and bones behind
i'll be waiting on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth ... all through the sky.
go tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

To all of Yari's family and wide circle of friends, the Run For The Fallen team will be honoring Yari at the 2919th mile early in the morning of August 2, Day 49, as the twelfth mile in beautiful Land Between the Lakes National Reserve on the KY/TN border northeast of Fort Campbell.

They set out each day about 6:30am after reading the roll call for the almost 60 fallen heroes whom they will honor that day so wherever you are imagine a cool summer morning in a very peaceful place which you can actually see quite well on the hybrid map on the FLICKR pages on www.runforthefallen.org

A small flag with Yari's picture will fly in the breeze by the highway as a larger Old Glory is jogged down the highway by a lone runner or accompanied by friends or family if they are in the area or other concerned Americans adding their support.

On August 24 across the nation, small informal runs of friends can be organize to coincide with the Final Run at Arlington National Cemetery.

It only takes one person to get the momentum going as I found out in my home town of Irvine, CA , where this Sunday we shall remember that RFTF is honoring one of our own Mark Daily, just outsdie of Nashville TN. There has been a groundswell of support to our seven Irvine families by people who will not forget their sacrifice and plan to come out on August 24 in a show of solidarity to all familes of the Fallen.

Last evening a ret.Sgt Major from Laredo TX made a long call to me after he had returned from three days in Clinton Co IL where he had run miles for his son and his son's buddy, also Wolfhounds from Schofield, like Yari, who had been killed in Sept.23, 06. Normally reserved, quiet and deeply grieving, this encounter with such solid and almost overwhelming support from the small towns in Clinton Co had unleashed emotion as he had run 8 miles on Tuesday and had received so much support and care from strangers. It had only taken one cold call by me a few weeks ago to the mayor of Germantown who grasped the significance and rallied every mayor in the county to get behind this RFTF outreach. It was a moving tribute from America's heartland and will not end there. Further plans are in the works to contact all those families honored that day. Sgt Mjr Locklear's experience may help other grieving Gold Star dads, especially, so if you would like to chat with him, just be in touch with me. Don't be a stranger!

After all, our friend James was Yari's best buddy from boot camp all the way to Hawijah, so the lives of the friends and families of both guys will alwys be entwined however far away we may be.

On this ,the day before Memorial Day , we remember the sacrifice that your family has made. The time you had with Yari was short but the memories will last forever. Each life that he touched will keep him alive with their thoughts and their love.
Each of us walks this earth for only a time and all that will remain will be in the hearts and minds of those that loved us. Honor Yari's memory by living each day to it's fullest.
Our thoughts are with you today and always. Love Cindy

On behalf of the Mokri family and to all of the wonderful people on this site who have written such nice messages, you words have brought our family so much comfort over the past year. Most of you are people we have never met and who may not have known Yari, yet you have taken the time to reach out to our family to show your love and support. We have read each and every message and thank all of you for taking the time to bring us a little comfort through our pain.

To my dear brother,
Today has been one year since you died and I cannot believe time has passed as it has. I miss you so much and all of the laughs and inside jokes you and I shared. It saddens me that those moments are merely memories now. Yari, you touched so many lives and continue to touch lives with the legacy you left behind. You will never be forgotten and you will continue to live on in our hearts. I will always try to live by the example you set for me. I hope to live in a way that would make you proud, just as you have made me proud. I love you always.

Your little sister,

Yari,
On the one year anniversary of your death, I wanted you to know that I'm thinking of you. I look at your picture constantly, as it sits on the shelf next to Byron's. I'm grateful for your bravery and courage in serving our country. You will never be forgotten. And, as you said to our family on Byron's Legacy page after he died, I will always be there to support the Mokri family.

Love,
Kristen Norwood Hullum
