Dr. Peter Hansen Obituary

Peter O. Hansen, M.D., "Kenai's Doctor Pete" passed into the arms of the Lord on March 25, 2021, after several months of battling Mesothelioma.
Pete was born in Spokane, Washington, in 1938.
He always enjoyed fixing things; in fact, when choosing a career, he was torn between becoming an auto mechanic (fixing cars) or family medicine (fixing people).
With his love for people, and knowing he could better provide for a family, he elected medicine, graduating from the University of Washington Medical School in 1963.
Eventually, he and his bride, Karolee, made their way to Alaska, and settled in the town of Kenai, which had no hospital or medical clinic and one gravel road running through town.
Doctor Pete formed the Kenai Medical Center, Inc., where he loved and served the Kenai Community for over 50 years.
Some of his medical equipment, supplies and memorabilia from this time will be displayed in the "Bush Doctor's Cabin," located next to the Kenai Chamber of Commerce and Visitor Center.
He was actively putting finishing details on his wishes for the cabin's interior at the time of his death.
Doctor Pete had a passion for Scouting, Masonry, old cars and small engines, snow machining and motorcycling.
He loved to dance and listen to music, especially Karolee's piano playing.
He actively promoted the Communities of Kenai and his original hometown of Cheney, Washington, in many ways.
If he had an idea that took root, he would not give up until what he envisioned was realized.
His sister, Teri, said, "Pete was a testament of what could be accomplished by the efforts of just one person."
Kenai's Doctor Pete is survived by his wife of 58 years, Karolee; daughter, Binget and son-in-law Stefan Nilsson; three grandchildren, Kjell, Bjorn and Annika; sister, Teri and brother-in law George Bybee; and several nieces and nephews.
He will be joining his sons Erik and Leif, as well as his parents Roy and Rosella Hansen, in Heaven.
A Celebration of Life was held at Kenai Christian Church on April 17, 2021 at 3 p.m. in Kenai; and a graveside service will be held near Cheney at Spokane-Cheney Memorial Garden on May at 2:30 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, please send donations to Great Alaska Council, Boy Scouts of America, 3117 Patterson St., Anchorage, AK 99504.

I knew Pete at EWU where we were both in a service club known as the Intercollegiate Knights. Even as a young man, Pete was clearly an outstanding person. Now in reading his obituary I realize how outstanding a life he led, and our shared interests of Scouting, Old Cars mechanical things, and Nordic Heritage. I have been to Kenai, spent several days fishing out of Ninilchik, and never knew that Pete was nearby. I am sorry I missed him there, but will see him in Heaven.

I am saddened to read of Pete's death. I knew him at EWU where we were both in the Intercollegiate Knights. He was a year younger but it was obvious even then that he had loads of potential, which I now realize he lived up to. Hi sister Teri (Helen) lived for a time near my parents on North Main St., Colville. My sincerest condolences to his family. Stan Johnson, Springfield, Virginia.
