Floyd Mattson Obituary

Dr. Floyd G. Mattson May 20, 1922 - February 4, 2010 SALEM - Our dear brother in Christ, Dr. Floyd Garfield Mattson, was called home by our Heavenly Father on February 4, 2010 while on vacation in Austin, Texas. Floyd sustained a brain injury after suffering a fall on January 22, from which he did not recover. Floyd was born to Elmer and Naomi Mattson in Iron Mountain, Michigan. They moved to the Portland, Oregon area when Floyd was four years old. After graduating from Woodburn High School in 1940, he attended Willamette University from 1940-1942. While there, he became a member of the Beta Theta Pi and Kappa Gamma Ro Fraternities. Floyd married Naomi R. Tyler in 1941, raising four sons. Naomi passed away in 1993. He entered North Pacific Dental School, which later became the Dental School at Oregon Health Sciences University, graduating in 1945 as a Doctor of Dental Surgery. Floyd proudly served his country during World War II, and later the Korean War, as a dentist and officer of the United States Navy. In 1946, he opened his dental practice in Portland where he treated patients for over fifty years, retiring in 1997. His patients spanned families covering five generations. Floyd was extremely grateful for his dedicated staff who worked beside him - some for over thirty years. Although retired, Floyd continued learning with his peers in OHSU Dental School study clubs. Enjoying serving others, he became a lifetime member of the Kiwanis Club and was a Portland Royal Rosarian for ten years. Floyd was a member of Hinson Memorial Baptist Church for over fifty years, and a member of the Navigators. After his retirement, Floyd and his second wife Rachel, moved to Salem, Oregon. They became members of Salem First Baptist Church where he served as a deacon. Floyd is survived by his loving wife, Rachel; his four sons, Larry, David, Mark and Dean and their wives; two step-children John and Julia; 15 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren; his sister and her husband, Joann and Dick Lamerson of Denver, Colorado; a first cousin and her husband, Elizabeth and Elvis Mills of Toledo, Oregon; many nephews and nieces. He was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, Marvin; his first wife, Naomi and a daughter-in-law Ann Mattson. A Memorial service will be held on Saturday, February 27, 2010 at 1 p.m. at Salem First Baptist Church, Salem, Oregon. In honor of Floyd, a memorial contribution can be made in lieu of flowers to the Salem First Baptist Church Missionary Fund, or to the Voice of the Martyrs. The family and friends of Floyd Mattson will miss him deeply, realizing that he is now with his Lord in heaven.
