Herbert Bauer Obituary

Herbert "Herb" Bauer

Salem - Herbert John Bauer, beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and friend to many, passed away peacefully September 6th at the age of 88.

Herb was born in Glen Ullen, North Dakota to George and Juliana Bauer on October 13, 1929. He moved to Salem with his parents and six brothers and sisters (Octiva, Ralph, Marion, Bernie, George and Kathleen) during the great depression.

He began his long career in bread delivery for Master Bread which was subsequently acquired by the Franz Bakery Company. Herb made many friendships along his delivery routes and earned his nickname "Holsom Herb" along the way.

Herb attended Sacred Heart High School, but it was Catherine Cooper who attended Salem High that caught his eye. At the time Cathy lived in rural South Salem and she has often said she dated Herb as he was the only one who had a car. Herb and Cathy made their home in Salem and celebrated 68 years of marriage together. They had many friends and were known for their fun times together and the amazing parties they hosted. Upon retirement they enjoyed spending winters in their beautiful Palm Springs home.

Herb is survived by his lovely wife Cathy, four children: Steve (Judi), Mark (JoAnn), Daniel, and Susan (Dennis); seven grandchildren and six great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his son Philip, three of his six siblings and his parents.

A celebration of life will be announced later. In lieu of flowers the family requests donations to the Alzheimer's Association. Assisting the family is Virgil T. Golden Funeral Service.
