James Noteboom Obituary

James Dean Noteboom September 19, 1945 - November 27, 2008 BEND - On September 19, 1945 James Dean Noteboom was born to Kenneth and Rose Noteboom in Williston, North Dakota. In 1949, the family moved to a farm outside of Salem, Oregon where Jim spent his childhood and eventually graduated from South Salem High School. In 1967, Jim graduated with honors from Oregon State University and went on to earn an MBA. During his post graduate studies, Jim met the love of his life, Marie Griepentrog. Jim and Marie were married in 1968 and celebrated their 40th wedding anniversary this past June. They would go on to have three children and six adoring grandchildren. Upon graduating from Oregon State, Jim began a 39 year military career that included service with the Navy, Marine Corps and Army, both on active duty and in the reserves. Jim served a tour of duty in Viet Nam in 1969 and later served as a military lawyer and adjunct instructor for the Defense Institute of International Legal Studies. As a military instructor, Jim led teaching and assessment teams throughout the world covering international laws of conflict and peace keeping operations. In 2002, he received a Masters of Strategic Studies degree from the United States Army War College. After returning from the Vietnam war, Jim attended law school at the University of Oregon and graduated in 1977. Upon graduation, Jim, Marie and their three children moved from Eugene to Bend, Oregon. He joined the law firm now known as Karnopp, Peterson, where he practiced for thirty one years focusing on Indian law, energy law and natural resources law. Recently, Jim was working with his dear friend and colleague Wold Mesghinna to develop a comprehensive energy plan for the African nation of Eritrea. Anyone close to Jim knew that he was man of diverse and vast interests, who never stopped whether at home or at the office. He loved his work and cherished the friends he made along the way. Jim was a fiercely loyal and devoted husband, father, and grandfather. His passion for life took him on a tireless journey that seemed as though it would never end. Jim will be forever remembered for his boisterous laugh, immense intellect, kind hearted nature, generosity, optimism and sense of humor. At 3:45 p.m., November 27, Jim Noteboom passed unexpectedly of leukemia at St. Charles Medical Center. He is survived by his wife Marie, daughters Andrea and Christian, son Aaron, brothers Robert and Kenneth, sisters Judy and Barbara and grandchildren Illa, Jaden, Asa, Silas, Ezra, and Charlotte. A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, December 6, 2008 at the Oregon National Guard Armory, 875 SW. Simpson Ave., Bend., followed by a graveside service.
