Leona Marie Schaffers

Salem - Leona Marie Schaffers passed away on July 6, 2020 in Salem, Oregon at the age of 100. She was born March 4, 1920 in Turner, Oregon to Albert and Anna Schmidt. She grew up on the family farm and graduated from Gervais High School. In 1940 she married Joseph Schaffers (deceased 1983). Together she and Joe raised 9 children, Elaine Perko (Jim), Marianne Schaffers (deceased 1993), Therese Foster (deceased 2012) (Fred), Joan Schaffers (Peter Valdez), Dorothy Mellon (Leo), Clare Bronec (Ken deceased 2013), John Schaffers, Patricia Schaffers and Barbara Lobdell (Jim). She is also survived by 14 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her brothers and sisters and was the last surviving member of the Schmidt family.Leona was a longtime member of St. Vincent de Paul church. She enjoyed games and played on numerous bowling leagues during her lifetime. Most recently she relished sharing her success in scoring 300 in perfect games while Wii bowling and playing pool with family and friends. She was a loving and devoted mother and will be missed. In compliance with current Covid restrictions a private funeral mass for family will be held on July 16, at 11:00 a.m. (the mass will be available to stream by contacting St. Vincent de Paul church). Following the mass there will be a graveside service at Calvary Cemetery in Mt. Angel at 12:30 p.m. which will be open to a maximum of 50 people with masks. Assisting the family is Unger Funeral Chapel - Mt. Angel, Oregon
