TILLAMOOK - A memorial service will be held for Lyle E. Specht on Friday, June 3, 2011 at 2 PM at St. Alban's Episcopal Church in Tillamook.

Lyle was born November 26, 1918 in Silverton, Oregon to Carl and Essie (Benson) Specht and passed away on May 29, 2011 at his home in Tillamook, Oregon at the age of 92.

Lyle is a 1937 graduate of Silverton High School where he played on the baseball and basketball teams, was in the band, hi choral group, acted in plays and was the class president his senior year.

Lyle went to Oregon State College (now OSU) from 1937 to 1941 and played on the baseball team, was a member of the R.O.T.C. cadet band for 4 years, was in a secret fraternity called Mask and Dagger that performed plays, was a member of the Sigma Chi Fraternity and was the president of his class in 1941.

During World War II, Lyle served in the United States Marine Corps from 1941 thru 1945. He served in Guadalcanal, Tarawa, Saipan and Okinawa, ending the war as a captain, and later earned the rank of Full Col., while serving in the Marine Corps Reserves.

Lyle also earned a Silver Star in Tarawa, the Navy Cross in Saipan, a Purple Heart from Okinawa, 3 Letters of Commendation and 3 Presidential Unit Citations.

After the war, Lyle moved back to Silverton for 2 years. He married Sybil Kennedy Mulder on June 14, 1947 in Portland, Oregon. They moved to Tillamook that summer and eventually settled on an 80 acre farm on Sutton Creek Rd.

Lyle worked for Farm Credit Federal Land Bank from 1946 until 1983.

Lyle belonged to and led many associations and organizations that helped build our community.

They included St. Alban's Episcopal Church (64 yrs), Tillamook County Fair Board (40 yrs), Tillamook Kiwanis Club (60 yrs), Tillamook YMCA Board and Trustee, Monday Musical, Tillamook Hospital Board, Tillamook High School Booster Club, Oregon State Fair Association, Historical Society Club, Master Masonic Lodge, Shrine Club, Prudent Plungers, Tillamook City Water Commission, Tillamook Elk's Lodge, Neah Kah Nie Dance Club, Tillamook Little Theater Group, Tillamook Tennis Club, Alderbrook Men's Golf League, and was active in organizing retirement gatherings for the 1st Battalion 6th Marine Regiment.

Lyle loved to play the piano, sing in the choir at church and work on his farm, raising beef and other farm animals.

Lyle is survived by his wife, Sybil Specht of Tillamook, OR; brother, Oscar Specht of Salem, OR; 2 children: Martha Stiffler and her husband Jim of Salem, and Mark Mulder and his wife Verena of Grapevine, TX.

6 grandchildren: Jack Mulder, Sam Mulder, Jane Imfeld, Stacey Armstrong, Stephen Stiffler and Lesley Stiffler.

4 great grandchildren; Brock Armstrong, Cole Armstrong, Emerson (Emmi) Mulder, and North Mulder.

Lyle is preceded in death by his brother, Raymond Specht, and sister, Louise Monroe.

Inurnment will be held at Willamette National Cemetery with full military honors.

Memorial contributions may be made to St. Alban's Episcopal Church Endowment Fund or Tillamook YMCA Endowment Fund.

Remembering Lyle today. I cant believe its been 8 years since his passing. I was privileged to know him and consider it an honour to have met such a giant of a man yet who was so humble. RIP Lyle - your were a star.

I was privileged to have met Lyle and Sybil when they visited Europe in the mid 1970's. I took up their kind offer to stay at Sutton Creek with them when I first visited the US in 1979. They subsequently stayed at my parents house on a visit to the UK. I remember fondly talking with Lyle about his war service and was impressed by both his bravery and humility. I remember when I first met Lyle. I was with the OSU Foundation and was coordinating a Telefund in Tillamook in 1980. After raising some funds for the OSU we went over to the Edmunds home in Garibaldi to celebrate with the best seafood feed on the coast. The night was made more enjoyable by having Lyle leading us in song at the piano for quite a session. There was not a time that when I was passing through Tillamook that I didn't think of 'Spook'. He was a great Marine and BEAVER. He was a real HERO. He was my friend. My sincere condolences go to his family.

The Lake family expresses it great sorrow and sadness today. But we rejoice in the life of Lyle Specht and the wonderful fellow Marine and friend that he has been to our father, P Frank Lake for all these many years. Just know our thoughts and prayers are with you all. I know Dad wishes he could get to Oregon to be with you but it is too long of a journey from Texas. He is with you in spirit for sure!
