Margaret "Jo" Hanel

Keizer - Margaret (Jo) Josephine Hanel passed away peacefully on January 3, 2018. On July 12, 1919, Clara and John Lebold welcomed their sixth child Margaret Josephine Lebold into the world in Salem, Oregon. Jo grew up with her six siblings Estella, Armella, Clara, Bernard, Cletus and Agnes on a farm. When Jo was in her early twenties she married Lavern Carl Hanel and together they had three children, Ronald Vaughn, Cheryl Ann and Susan Carol. She attended business school and then went on to work for many years. In the 1960s, she stopped working and devoted her time to her husband and family. Jo enjoyed traveling to Canada, Mexico, Hawaii and the Caribbean islands along with other small trips around the United States, but really enjoyed going to the Oregon Coast. Her grandchildren and great-grandchildren remember her as someone who was witty, good with numbers, loved playing games and attending their school events. Her hobbies included cheering on the Gonzaga basketball team, traveling, bowling, golf, gardening, pool, painting, and of course playing cards. Jo loved the Lord and served him until her last days. Jo will be remembered, loved and greatly missed by her family and friends, but they rest easy knowing she had a long, full life and now is in the hands of her creator.

A Rosary followed by Mass and a reception will be on Thursday, January 11, 2018 at 10:00am, at St. Edward Catholic Church 5303 River Rd. N., Keizer. Interment will be at Willamette National Cemetery at 3:00pm. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the Salem Public Library or the Catholic Church in her honor. Assisting the family is Virgil T. Golden Funeral Service.
