Melvin "Manny" Downey

Melvin Richard Downey December 6, 1922 - September 16, 2008 SALEM - Melvin Richard Downey was born on December 6, 1922 at Siletz, Oregon to Roy and Mae Downey. Melvin attended Multnomah Trade School during World War II to be a welder and worked at Albina Shipyard where they built Liberty Ships Freighters. He worked for years up until it closed. He attended more classes for electrician and worked for Mike's Electric Salem for 20 years before retiring. Melvin resided in Salem for 55 years. Melvin is a member of the Confederated Tribes of the Siletz Indians of Oregon and is survived by his daughter, Shirley Sayers (Andy Sayers); seven sisters, Ila Hoiness from Longview, Washington, Marty Lockhart, Joann Miller, Jean Garrett, Blanche Tyler, Deanna Howell and Charlotte Noble all from Siletz, Oregon; and three brothers, Roy Downey from Salem, Oregon and Peter and Tommy Downey from Siletz, Oregon; and numerous cousins, nieces, and nephews. His wife, Frieda; and their son, Roy preceded him in death. Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. on Friday, September 19 at Virgil T. Golden Funeral Services, 605 Commercial St. SE., Salem.
