Roger Peterson Obituary

Roger Peterson

December 10, 1946 - February 22, 2013

One of the early members of Salem's Dirty Dozen made his last tee time on February 22. He's now playing through. Roger Peterson was only 66 years old. He died from heart failure while preparing for the annual boy's trek to Furnace Creek to, well, go golfing.

Born in Tillamook to Mae Lewis and Leroy Peterson, Roger graduated from South Salem High School. There he met and later married his sweetheart, Sandy, and they remained sweethearts for 47 years. He wooed her by cruising the "gut" in his 1957 Ford, along with double dates to drive-in theatres with Cathy and Mike Parker, who drove a dorky 1956 Chevy. Roger and Sandy were blessed beyond measure in 1972 with the birth of their son, Shon. Among dad's favorite adventures was sharing special time on Shon's fishing boat in Alaska.

Other adventures included Peterson and Parker teaching their boys to snow ski (the kids were better skilled) and family outings to Three Creeks Lake. Roger was a long-time assistant manager with Safeway stores in Oregon. For the last two or so decades, he was a retail manager for Crossmark where he earned admiration of coworkers and customers. His mischievous grin was the hallmark of his personality. Roger's professionalism and "let's make this happen" attitude were contagious.

His hobbies included golf, golf, cooking, and golf and cooking. Roger served as the so-called "Sue Chef" for the last twenty-some years at the annual Cabin Trip, a five-day golf outing in Central Oregon. This June, Roger's friends will gather at the cabin and rename the tournament The Peterson Invitational. There the boys will toast a Dr. Pepper and hope to God that someone else remembers how Roger planned for and prepared all the meals.

Roger is survived by his beloved Sandy and "number one" son, Shon; his parents, Mae and Leroy; his siblings, Janet, Glenn and Richard.

To honor Sandy's mother and brother, please consider memorial contributions to cancer survivors through the American Cancer Society, Willamette Valley Hospice or the charity of one's choice. Roger's memorial service is Monday, March 4 at 10:00 a.m. at Howell-Edwards-Doerksen's Chapel at 1350 Commercial Street SE in Salem. Come early because parking is at a premium.

I just learned of Roger's passing. Sandy, please accept my deepest sympathy to you, family, and loved ones. Roger was a great friend and mentor. In high school, he was “Pete” to me and I was “Kess” to him. Although drifting apart Pete's values, distinctive voice, and mannerism remained part of my fondest memories. The two of you made the neatest couple. I wish both of you peace.

Roger and I were both a lot younger when we worked together in Stayton. I learned a lot while working with him, and with any luck, he did too. I thought a lot of Roger, and have missed him over the years. Now a friend is gone before I could get back in touch. So sorry for your loss, Sandy.

I just heard of Roger's passing and was deeply saddened. I'll always remember those great dinners at the cabin, playing golf with him, pleasant conversations and that infectious smile. Oh .. and before I forget, thanks for leaving your tee shot on 15 at Glaze Meadow one inch short :)

This may sound corny but its times like these that remind me of Paul McCartney's final lyrics as a Beetle:

"And in the end the love you take is equal to the love you make"

Sandy and Shon - having worked with Roger at CROSSMARK, his contagious smile and great conversations will be missed. A part of our family has gone to the 'Pebble Beach' in the sky, where a hole in one will come easily to such a caring, thoughtful person.

I have known since I was very young that my brother Roger and I were kindred spirits. Our hearts just stayed connected loving life, pets and it's opportunities.. He was my Rock growing up and then he met Sandy my dear Sis, his wonderful soul mate in life. The one he confided in, always talked to and the built bridges of life together. They shared and loved their rocks in life and built a strong foundation of love, compassion, respect, and most of all Integrity. They were made for each other. I won't be able to be at the service. I am sending my heart there with him. He's my rock and my brother.
