Suzanne Halsey Obituary

Suzanne H. Halsey

February 28, 1928 - April 17, 2013

Farewell Suzanne H. Halsey

KEIZER - Suzanne H. Halsey, daughter of Betty (Finlay) and Simon P. Herman, died on April 17, 2013. She was 85 years old. Born on February 28, 1928 in Manhattan in New York City, Suzanne graduated from the Dalton School. She lived with her young family in Roslyn and in Plandome Manor on Long Island, New York, until they relocated in 1966 to Belvedere, California. In 1995, she joined her children in Oregon.

Suzanne's last words included "I am thankful for all I have been given and I hope I have made some mark of remembrance…." These words are poignantly simple and strike at the heart of how most people should hope to feel in their final days—filled with gratitude and optimism.

Suzanne had an East coast sense of style that exuded class, confidence, and charisma. She was a petite woman who lived a not-so-petite life, crowded with family, friends, travel, art, fashion, and volunteer work in her community. She enjoyed her time with Guide Dogs for the Blind, Salem Art Association Gallery Guides, Deepwood Historic Home, and the Soroptomists.

Suzanne's kind and sweet nature was obvious, and better yet, infectious to those around her. But she also had a quiet strength and fearlessness so profound in the final months of her life that whispered, "I will not give up." The world needs more people like Suzanne. She will be deeply missed and fondly remembered.

She is survived by her son Michael Batlan (Kathy) and grandchildren Cecelia Getchell (Russ), Aaron Newell, and Elizabeth Batlan, all of Salem; daughter Emily Batlan, of Seattle, Washington; stepson Brooke P. Halsey, Jr. (Karen) and children Brennan and Lauren, of Tiburon, California; and cousins Babette Salvati, Irene Dineen, and Linda Claeys, all of Florida.

Suzanne is predeceased by Richard S. Batlan, who she married in 1946, Brooke P. Halsey, who she married in 1970, and daughter Patricia Batlan-Elwood. A private celebration of life will be held in the near future.
