Teddy Mayfield Obituary

Teddy Ernest (Ted) Mayfield

September 5, 1935 - August 28, 2015

Born Sept. 5, 1935 in Prineville, OR to Loice P. and Mabel (Yeager) Mayfield.

Passed away Aug. 28, 2015 Sheridan due to an injury sustained while attempting to manually start an airplane.

When he was a child, the family moved to a 40-acre farm in Gresham where he attended school, graduating from Gresham High. After a stint in sales in Texas, he married and relocated to Portland. He later served in the Army 101st Airborne Division, where he learned to skydive.

For 22 years he owned and operated Pacific Parachute Center, in Sheridan, OR.

Ted and his wife of almost 10 years, Virginia, split their time between Sheridan and Apache Jct. AZ, prior to her passing May 20, 2014. She was the love of his life. He served as a Sheridan City Councilman and was a very active civic leader. He loved his work with Kiwanis and spent many hours helping those in need. He also worked many years tirelessly for Phil Sheridan Days Celebration with his close friend and fellow councilman Bob White.

Ted is survived by his daughter Gwen Barnard of Portland, OR.

Memorial Services will be held at 11:00 AM, Saturday, Sept. 12th at the West Valley Community Campus (the old Willamina High School Auditorium).

Interment at Willamette National Cemetery, Portland.

Arrangements are with Adamson's Sheridan Funeral Home. Online condolences may left at www.AdamsonsSheridanFuneralHome.com

I jumped at his center in the 90´s. I remember him being a pretty nice guy.

If you didn't love Ted you didn't know him. I made around 800 jumps in Sheridan over a 2 year period. Truly the best DZ on earth if having a good time mattered, and it did.

Oilcap told me about Teds passing 6 months ago. We lost a legend that day.

Condolences to his family.

I just learned today about Ted. I first met him while I traveled from Richland Washington in 1972 on my very first parachute meet from the Tri-Cities. I was still in high school when I started jumping so I traveled with a few of the old-timers to his drop . Always found Ted as a character and a person that would listen to you. Sorry for everybody´s lost. . Ted was a nice guy. I currently live in Minneapolis Minnesota. Been here for about 30 years now.

Learned a lot from Ted and co-worker's / skydiving buddy's.
Loved to go out pack / jump and have fun all day and way into the night.
Great man ( Ted ).

I considered Ted a friend, he was a blast to jump with. His smile and enthusiasm for skydiving was infectious. So sorry to read of his passing.

For 14 years or so I jumped with Ted as well as I jump-mastered for him. I did a lot of work for Ted at the loft and at his house and hanger down at the end of the runway for which he paid me in jumps and my pilot licence completely(plane and instructor) To us who knew him then he was affectionately known as "Short Round, thanks to Otis." I can still remember him jumping into the Sheridan City park at Easter all dressed up as the Easter Bunny with candy for the little ones that loved it as much as he did. It brought joy to his heart to do this every year. Ted had a good and a very big heart. I am truly saddened by his passing and I will miss him lots. For the last 14 tears I have lived in Phoenix and didn't know he was a snow bird living half the year in Apache Junction 40 miles away. A lot of time wasted as we could have seen each other some. Rest in peace my friend.I will miss you.

I will always remember the time (1977) when I was a novice skydiver parachuting through clouds over Sheridan, and Ted suddenly appeared in a big open space, laughing as he glided by and exclaimed, "Woo-hoo, this is fun!" Then he disappeared into the clouds again, still laughing. When we landed, he signed my log book (as jumpmaster) for that jump. His humor and enthusiasm made that particular jump an unforgettable one. I'm saddened to hear of his passing.
