John Simpson Obituary

It is with love and sadness that we announce the death of John Thomas Simpson Jr., 79, on Feb. 21, 2007. Mr. Simpson died at Iredell Memorial Hospital of complications from Alzheimer's and Parkinson's diseases. He was born Dec. 21, 1927, in Clover, S.C., the son of the late John Thomas and Pearl Williams Simpson. He was a member of First ARP Church and Statesville Elks Lodge. He graduated from Rock Hill High School and served in the U.S. Army. After graduating from the University of South Carolina with a Pharmacy degree, his first job took him to Camden, S.C. Later in his career he worked at Hawthorne Pharmacy in Columbia, S. C. In 1961 he, along with the late John Gardner, opened Medical Centre Pharmacy in Statesville. Many successful young people were employed at this popular pharmacy, among them, Larry Marlin, Richard Murray, Sam Pratt, David Bowers and Donnie Bowers, who became successful pharmacists after graduating from the University of South Carolina. Pharmacy was John's passion and his life and he delighted in the accomplishments and successes of those he encouraged to become pharmacists. In 1976 he and Fred Lowry opened Medi-Rx Pharmacy in north Iredell and it became the love of his life. Survivors include his devoted wife Barbara Blume Simpson; a brother, Steve Simpson of Flat Rock; a dear aunt, Grace Simpson of Cayce, S.C.; and several nieces and nephews. A graveside service to celebrate his life will be held Saturday, Feb. 24, at 2 p.m. at Oakwood Cemetery, Statesville, with the Rev. Bob Sherer, officiating. There will be no scheduled visitation, but the family will receive friends at home. The family would like to extend special thanks to the wonderful staff at Autumn Care in Statesville and Hospice of Iredell County. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Hospice and Palliative Care of Iredell County, 2347 Simonton Road, Statesville, NC 28625, or to the Iredell County Humane Society, P.O. Box 1617, Statesville, NC 28687 or to the charity of the donor's choice. Reavis Funeral Home of Statesville is serving the family of Mr. Simpson.

Bobbi, I will always be grateful for the influence that Tommy has had on my life and career. It was Tommy's help and encouragement that were instrumental in my enrolling and being accepted into the pharmacy program at the University of South Carolina. Working at "Medical Center Pharmacy" was a wonderful experience and I have many rich memories of the good times that we all had there. Tommy modeled service, compassion and caring. He had such a desire to promote the profession of pharmacy by recruiting young men to consider pharmacy as there life's work. His hard work and business acumen produced a great roll model for so many young men looking for some direction in life. I know I would have had a different life and career without Tommy's influence. I morn for your loss but I also celebrate the continuing influence that I know Tommy's life has had and will to continue to have on the people that were blessed to work with him. I also remember the good times at Chat-n-Nibble when ya'll bought our meals. I pray that that the peace of God which passes all understanding will be with you today and forever. Love, Sam

It is with a heavy heart and great sadness to loose such a wonderful and patient/man. Tommy was a all around good guy. I will always carry memories of Tommy with me. When I think of Tommy I will remember most his wonderful smile,or the little laugh he had. It was certainly my distinct pleasure to get to know and provide care for such a special man. As Tommy himself had provided care and compassionate service to countless others through out his years serving the public as a Pharmacist. It was indeed my sincere pleasure getting to know/providing care for him. And getting to know his wonderful wife Bobbie as well. He was truly loved ,and will be Greatly missed. My Love, Thoughts, Prayers are extended to Bobbie and the Simpson Family.
