Frank Kohlasch Obituary

Frank W. Kohlasch passed from this world on May 21, 2005, following a long and courageous battle with cancer. He is survived by his loving wife of 27 years, Joyce (Bajger) Kohlasch; his first wife Virginia Haley of Greenwich, Conn.; his sister, Doris Cross of Limington, Ma.; his daughter, Virginia Stanford of New Rochelle, N.Y.; and his granddaughter, Meaghan Ann Stanford of Mt. Kisco, N.Y. He is preceded in death by his parents and brother, Robert F. Kohlasch of St. Augustine, Fla.

Born November 1920 in New Rochelle to Frank H. and Sophia Kohlasch, Frank attended local schools and Iona College in New Rochelle. He proudly served in the United States Coast Guard during World War II, 1941 to 1945, and served 24 years in the Coast Guard Reserves, retiring at the rank of Chief Petty Boatswain Mate. He was employed as deputy purchasing agent for the county of Westchester, N.Y., and as purchasing manager for the N.Y. Zoological Society; retiring to St. Augustine in 1984.

Frank, with his father and brother was owner and founder of Echo Bay Boatyard Inc. of New Rochelle, N.Y. Drawing on his Coast Guard experience and his love of the sea, Frank spent many years sailing the New England waters with his family. He served as Regatta official of the 1964 Olympic rowing finals held in N.Y.C., and was a former member and officer of the Echo Bay Yacht Club New Rochelle, the St. Augustine Yacht Club, and served as past president of the New Rochelle Rowing Club.

Among his activities, Frank served as fire captain of engine co. of the Larchmont, N.Y., and as captain of the Eastside engine co. of White Plains, N.Y. He was past Faithful Commander of Cardinal Farley General Assembly, Knights of Columbus, Third Degree member of Knights of Columbus Council #611 and Fourth Degree Bishop Verot #0166 assembly of St. Augustine.

Upon his move to St. Augustine, he became a member of the St. Augustine B.P.O.E. Elks Lodge #829, a past commander of the American Legion Post # 719 and a member of the St. Augustine Boating Club. He was a R.S.V.P. member of the St. Johns County Sheriff Dept. and a lifetime member of the National Association of Purchasing Management Inc. While he and his wife were enjoying their vacation home in Connestee Falls, N.C., Frank served with the Connestee Falls Fire Dept. and was a member of the Connestee Falls Fishing Club. He was an attendee of the St. Anastasia Catholic Church, where he served as an usher.

He will be missed by his family and loved ones who wish him calm seas and a following wind.

Frank’s family will receive friends Wednesday, 8 to 9 a.m. at St. Anastasia Catholic Church with a Funeral Mass at 9 a.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Frank’s name to: The Community Hospice of Northeast Florida, 4266 Sunbeam Rd., Jacksonville, FL 32257 or St. Anastasia Catholic Church, 5205 A1A South, St. Augustine, FL 32080.
