James Pickens Obituary

James Robert Pickens Sr., "Bud," of St. Augustine, Florida, died on Tuesday, Jan. 19, 2016, at Flagler Hospital, he was 84 years old. James was born on Oct. 28, 1931, at Rahway hospital in New Jersey. He graduated from Rahway High School, served in the U.S. Navy from 1951 to 1955 aboard the Destroyer Glennon and then attended Rutgers University.
In 1954, he married Carol Gertrude Evans, and together they had three children, James Robert Jr., Lorie Jean and Lisa Beth. Carol passed away in 2011 and James was re-married to Benjamin James Gioia in 2013. James worked as a lineman and later supervisor at New Jersey Bell for 35 years.
A unique soul, James was very active: He skied, sailed, went scuba diving, was an avid runner and piloted small aircraft. He was a public servant and volunteer who served as a member of the Jaycees, a Rahway councilman and deacon at both the First Presbyterian Church of Rahway and Westfield Presbyterian Church. James spent much of his retirement as president and then treasurer of the Alcoholics Anonymous chapter in St. Augustine, where he supported and helped many people. He enjoyed spending time with his friends and family. James will be greatly missed.
James is survived by his sister, June Heisch; his spouse, Benjamin Gioia; his daughters and sons-in-law, Lorie and Weston Williams, Lisa and Thomas Walker; and grandchildren, Edward James Williams, Brian Milton Williams, Erick Drake Walker, Corinne Evans Walker, Joanna Pickens Walker and Melanie Francis Walker. His son, James Jr., predeceased him in 2008.
A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 27, 2016, at Memorial Presbyterian Church in St. Augustine.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks to please make a donation to Shriners Hospitals for Children in his name.

Missing you Dad, every day. You were a great dad, playmate and friend. You taught me how to live life and be brave even when you are not certain of your future. Chin up and know that you can take it, have faith and all will be well. He taught me that there will be an afterlife and not be afraid. There is always love.
