Thomas (Tom) Walter Browder
(1923 – 2016
Thomas (Tom) Walter Browder, 93, of Palm Coast, Florida, passed away on Sept. 14, 2016, at the Stuart F. Meyer Hospice House in Palm Coast. Mr. Browder was born June 17, 1923, in Stokes County, North Carolina, to the late Nelson and Cora Bowman Browder.
He retired after 40 years with Western Electric Company in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. Tom served his country proudly as a private first class in the United States Army and earned the European African Middle Eastern Theatre Ribbon with two Bronze Battle Stars and Good Conduct Medal. He was a lifetime member of VFW Post 2391 in St. Augustine, Florida.
He loved to dance and sing with his friends at Las Palmas where he resided for the past six years in Palm Coast. Tom always had a positive thought and chuckle for everyone that he met.
In addition to his parents, four brothers and one sister, he was preceded in death by his loving wife of 37 years, Helen Hester Browder. Visitation will start at 1 p.m. with a funeral service to follow at 2 p.m. Friday, Sept. 23, 2016, at Slate Funeral Home in King, North Carolina, with the Rev. Tyler Hege officiating. Burial will follow at Oak Lawn Memorial Gardens at 3:30 p.m.
He is survived by two daughters: Bobbie Ray (Cliff), of Palm Coast, and Robin Reid (Wayne), of King; six grandchildren, Todd Ray (Nadine), of Palm Coast, Christin Sprinkle (Kevin), of Rural Hall, North Carolina, Justin Reece (Sarah), of Barre, Vermont, Mickey Reid of Chattanooga, Tennessee, Matt Reid (Shannon) of Walnut Cove, North Carolina, and Howard Reid (Ginger) of Sandy Ridge, North Carolina; eight great-grandchildren, Trenton Ray, Zachary Allen, Octavia Vaden, Sierra Metcalf, Mya Reece, Chris Kennon, Caitlyne Mabe (Adam) and Braxton Sherron; and four great-great-grandchildren, Morgan, Bryan, Alexis and Cyleigh Mabe.
Memorials may be made to VFW Post 2391, 6184 US-I, St. Augustine, FL 32086.
Slate Funeral Home in King, N.C., is serving the family.
