Fred J. Obst Jr.

Stevens Point - Fred J. Obst Jr., age 91, of the Town of Linwood, died at home on Saturday, May 15, 2021 while under the care of Aspirus Hospice.

Fred was born to the late Fred & Helen (Radtke) Obst Sr. on July 22, 1929 in Chicago, IL. At the age of 11, his family moved to the Town of Linwood. He attended the local grade school and graduated from P.J. Jacobs High School.

Fred met the love of his life, Barbara Newby, in April of 1956. They were united in marriage on December 29, 1956 at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Stevens Point. They lived in Plover where they brought 4 children into the world, Tom, Karen, James, and Wendy, before moving briefly to Pine Island in Lee County, Florida in 1970. In 1971 they moved to the town of Linwood in Portage County and started to build their dream home on Fred's parent's farm where he lived until his passing.

Fred served in the U.S. Army from 1951-1953. He was honorably discharged. He worked as a Welder Pipefitter for Local Union 434, working at various job sites. He retired in 1992.

Fred was an all around craftsman; a welder, builder, and designer. In his spare time, he enjoyed gardening and taking his tractor into the woods. He was a voracious reader and loved learning. He was a member of the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars.

He is survived by children, Thomas (Laura) Obst, Karen Obst, James (Zhiling) Obst, and Wendy (Peter) Dane; grandchildren, Hans Obst, Hannah Obst, Hunter Obst, Ian (Elizabeth) Kurzinski, Kaitlyn Kurzinski, Keegan Obst, and Conan Obst; and great-grandchildren, Liam and Emma Kurzinski.

A Funeral Service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Friday, May 21, 2021at Boston Funeral Home with Rev. David E. Ficken presiding. A time of visitation will be held at the Funeral Home on Friday from 12 Noon until the time of service. Burial will take place in Linwood Union Cemetery.
