Jon Newman Obituary

Jon Newman, 45, Amherst, died Thursday, March 8, 2012, at Ministry Saint Michael's Hospital in Stevens Point.

Jon was born in Stevens Point to Jim and Vivian Newman, and graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point with a degree in biology. He spent two years in Malawi, Africa, with the Peace Corps where he met his wife, Michelle (nee Brown, Rockford, Ill.), whom he married in 1993. He completed his master's degree in physical therapy at Slippery Rock University in Pennsylvania, and returned to Stevens Point where he spent most of his career working at Ministry Saint Michael's Hospital as a physical therapist and geriatric physical therapy specialist. Jon was an active participant in pain management research in the field of physical therapy. Jon's love of nature was seen in his enthusiasm for hiking, biking, cross country skiing, long distance running, frog studies, organic gardening, and his efforts to reestablish native prairie grasses and flowers on his 85-acre farm.

Jon was a devoted husband and Staffordshire bull terrier owner.

Jon is survived by his wife, Michelle; his brother, Jim Newman in Los Angeles; and sisters, Linnea Newman in North Creek, N.Y., and Patricia Ramsay in Daytona Beach, Fla.

Memorial service will be at 6 p.m. Friday, March 16, in Room 170 of the Trainer Natural Resources Building at UW-SP.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to Villagereach.org.

I remember Jon as a truly concerned caregiver when I worked with him at St. Michael's. Although I did not see Jon often, I will surely miss finding him walking his trails on his land in Lanark, and for helping me improve my access road neighboring the Newman property. We would often discuss an upcoming gun/deer hunt season, so that the safety of the hunt would be preserved. Jon will be missed. Michelle and family, my thoughts and prayers are with you. May your memories keep him close.

Michelle, Linnea, Trish, Jimmy and the rest of the Newman extended family,

I followed Jon's final year from a great distance via Linnea's e-mails. It ended up being just about 9 months, a time period any mother can relate to, that was Jon's last fight against cancer. I have felt deepest sympathy and respect for his strength, everyday, during the months before Jon made his departure from this earth. I met Jon in mid 90s while I lived it Wisconsin and feel fortunate for having known him. I was deeply touched by his e-mails, just days before he was too sick to write anymore. He was still doing medical research for my daughter, he was still thinking about others, he was still the same caring, kind Jon that he had always been. My most heart filled sympathies go to the whole Newman family. The loss of Jon is beyond my comprehension. Jon lived a life many of us wish we could, quietly leaving a positive impact on this planet. For those marks he left, he will never die. He lives through his prairie, his colleagues he shared his knowledge with, his patients he helped to find cure for their problems and mostly through his family he loved and was so loyal to. I'm sending you all my love and I am very thankful for having known Jon and the rest of your beautiful family. You have been a big part in my life.

I only knew Jon online but our meeting nearly 10 years ago forever changed how I approach medicine, therapy, and science. He taught me so much. He was a mentor and friend. He was one of the most patient, kind, and thoughtful people I have ever known. I'll miss him. RIP Jon.

I didn't know Jon personally, but since I also work at Saint Michael's Hospital, I would see him on occasion and he always had a smile for everyone and a "hello." I will truly miss seeing him and his beautiful smile.

To Jon's family....my deepest sympathy.

I have known Jon since we were 2 & 3 years old. Although I haven't seen him often during our adult years, I have so many happy memories from our childhood! Michelle, Jim, Patricia and Linnea--I am sorry for the sadness you are going through! Jon's great character and personality will never be forgotten.

I had the privilege of growing up with Jon in Stevens Point. His enthusiasm, integrity and love of nature were rooted in summers spent playing in Iverson Park - building tree forts, crossing rivers, and enjoying the natural serenity.

Jon also introduced me to Nutella and U2 before either were known or popular with most Wisconsinites.

Thanks Jon!

Jon's words and wisdom through his postings on SomaSimple helped me become a better therapist, for that I am forever grateful for the opportunity that I had for knowing him, he can not be replaced and will never be forgotten.

I was lucky to know Jon. I am better for having known Jon. He taught me so much and his brilliance was only overshadowed by his humility. Our pain science research project will continue on, but he cannot be replaced. His contributions to the physical therapy community are numerous and we have lost a leader and a friend.

I have nothing but super memories of Jon. We worked together in Home Health...all those years ago. He always spoke so lovingly of his beautiful wife and of his dogs. This world is a little sadder now that he's gone.

Linnea: I am sorry for the loss of your brother. He was far too young to be taken from this earth.

He was the essence of intelligence, sweetness, and dedication to idealistic causes and career; I had the pleasure of knowing him and having wonderful conversations whenever I saw him...the last time I saw him he came over and wanted to shake my hand and tell me about his failing health. I had the sinking feeling about the prognosis... Our condolences and love to Linnea, Patricia and Jim. Elinor and Roberto Assardo
