Kirk Fleischauer Obituary

Kirk Thomas Fleischauer, 52, of Schofield, died Monday, Nov. 7, 2011.

Kirk was born on July 2, 1959, in Stevens Point, and graduated from Stevens Point Area Senior High School. He then went on to earn a degree from UW-Eau Claire. He also attended the University of Wisconsin School of Law. After several years with the Wausau advertising firm of Kinzie & Green, Kirk embarked on his life's true calling - Kirk Fleischauer Photography - a place where he engaged people, captured their spirit and created visceral portraiture that continues to bring joy to so many.

Kirk was a prominent and tireless volunteer in support of downtown revitalization efforts. His studio on the Mall was a well-known landmark in Wausau and his energy, creativity, compassion, wit and keen mind were treasured by countless friends and family. They all miss him dearly but console that Kirk is finally able to rest in peace and without pain. Kirk was an avid reader, an insatiable learner and a charismatic conversationalist. He loved training at the YMCA, kayaking and the easy camaraderie of friends. He was engaging and without pretense. Kirk made life better for others.

Kirk is survived by his daughter, Alixandra and grandson, Joseph, Umatilla, Fla.; his mother, Mary, Stevens Point; sisters, Missy, Belle Fourche, S.D. and Vicki, Sun Prairie; brothers, Mark, Vancouver, Wash. and Alan, Minnetonka, Minn.; and beloved nieces and nephews, Molly, Jesse, Chris, Emily, Kari, Matt and Mason.

Kirk was preceded in death by his father Emil.

An informal Open House and Celebration of Kirk's life will be held Wednesday from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., Nov. 23, 2011, at The Jefferson Street Inn, 201 Jefferson St., Wausau. Friends are welcome to come share fond memories of Kirk, celebrate his many gifts to our community, and even come attired in Kirk's trademark black T-shirt if so inspired. Contributions in Kirk's name may be made to the Marathon County Public Library Foundation, the YMCA or another meaningful cause.

Kirk's family is deeply grateful for and overwhelmed by the outpouring of support and love for this wonderful man. We thank you all for being such good friends to Kirk.

It was a true blessing to meet Kirk an work with him on our family and newborn pictures. He was inspiring and had amazing talent! He is one of those people that after you meet you had felt you already knew him. He was professional, kind, and so easy to talk with. Our deepest sympathy goes out for his family.

Growing up in Park Ridge, Kirk was my neighbor, classmate and friend. I remember him as having a deep love for his family, a kind heart, a quick wit and a twinkle in his eye.
I remember the summer after 7th grade, Kirk needed someone to cover his paper route and he asked me if I would do it. At the time I didn't understand how empowering that was. Only boys had paper routes. There was just something magical about peddling our bikes through our neighborhood at dawn, delivering papers to our neighbors.
I am sorry to hear of Kirk's passing. Deepest sympathy to all of Kirk's family.

Kirk took pictures of my family and he was so great with my kids. He loved how easily he could get my son (who was 9 mo old at the time) to smile so big and had enlarged one of the pictures of him and I and placed it in his studio window when he was located by the mall. He was an awesome photographer and he made the whole session very enjoyable and very personable. He was so very talented and was a wonderful and caring person. He will be truly missed by everyone that his talents have touched around the community.

My thoughts are prayers go out to his family and friends. He will be truly missed.

Kirk took my senior pictures, as well as the senior pictures of my brother and many of my friends. He made an awkward, heavily anticipated experience fun and lighthearted. Though I was almost always uncomfortable in my skin at that time in my life, Kirk made me feel attractive and worthy of being photographed. He was gifted, and this surely is a loss to the community of artists in Wausau.

My deepest condolences to his friends and loved ones,

I am so sad to hear about my old friend Kirk. I knew Kirk since we were in first grade at Washington School, and over the years he made me laugh many many times. In fact I still sing a song that he wrote in 4th grade music class. He was a good friend, and I have many warm memories of him. "The Fly guy" was one of a kind. My sympathies especially go out to Kirk's mother and his family. Kirk, you will be missed but not forgotten.

Kirk took the most handsome and breath taking pictures of our son in his final year of High School. We were so looking forward to having the rest of our sons pictures taken with this beautiful artist. Our hearts go out to Kirk and his family. Respectfully, Julie Knetter :-)

Kirk and I used to grab coffee at Something's Brewing and exchange thoughts on our favorite books. I had not spoken with him in several years but I certainly considered him a friend. He photographed my wedding and in typical Kirk fashion did an outstanding job. A very sad day. My thoughts and prayers are with Kirk and his family.

I met Kirk through his talent. He photographed our wedding over 20 years ago and my children through the years. I enjoyed conversation with him at the Y. So charismatic, a joy to see on any occasion. I am sorry for your loss.

Kirk photographed my daughter's wedding in February. I will never be able to look at her wedding photos without thinking of him. He did a wonderful job, especially capturing snow pictures. He was also very charming; all of the members of the wedding party enjoyed being with him. Condolences!

I worked with Kirk while I was an intern at Kinzie & Green the summer of 1992. The whole experience was a joy, but Kirk was truly a bright spot. He made me laugh many times and, perhaps more importantly, he made me think. Thank you, Kirk. I haven't spoken to you in many years, but I'll always remember you.

So many are grateful for the talent Kirk possessed. His 'easy eye' captured momentous chapters in our Book of Life. Heartfelt condolences to his family and friends. Thanks for sharing him~

Such a blessing to so many. His work graces many corners of my home. I always loved to look at the creative way Kirk captured moments. So glad he was a part of our lives.

We knew Kirk when he was a young photographer setting up shop in downtown Stevens Point. He took our son's graduation photos in 1987. We especially want to express our condolences to his mom, Mary, who was an esteemed colleague at UWSP. We are thinking of you and your family. Sally Clanton & Dave Staszak

I am saddened to hear of Kirk's passing. He definitely touched my life and my 2 daughters as he was their 1st choice photographer for their senior pictures. What a gifted and remarkable person you were Kirk.
