Albert Suter Obituary

Al Suter passed peacefully Thursday, June 29, 2017, with his family and loved ones at his side. He was the beloved husband of the late Michaela Suter (nee Sams). He will be forever missed and remembered well for his unique larger than life personality, living vigorously as a caring and determined man who laughed deeply and shied away from nothing.

Son to Joseph and Catherine, he was born in 1935 in Newark, NJ. Growing up he enjoyed playing football and summers at the Jersey Shore. Working hard in high school, afterwards he found himself far above Cayuga's waters at Cornell University, another home he found dear. Here he played as a starting linebacker for the Big Red. Excelling in college he earned degrees in engineering and an MBA. After a 22 year career as Senior Vice Chairman and Chief Operating Officer of Emerson, he retired in 2001 only to go for ten more years with Junior Achievement, providing further support to JA beyond then. He's survived by his children, Allison, Bradley and Christian, brother Bill, and Sally Conlin, his companion of the last six years, and all those who affectionately call him 'Uncle Al'.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Junior Achievement, where Mr. Suter served with dedication on local, national, and worldwide boards for 37 years.

Great business leader. Relentless in his pursuit of performance, cost cutting and profitability. I worked at Emerson corporate and divisions under Al. He always stood up for the divisions during planning conferences. Friendly and approachable to the most junior employee. Rest in peace.

Dear Al I am so saddened you've left, left your children and family. And closer to me, left dear Sally Conlin. You hardly had enough time together and I know she loved you dearly and now without your presence, she will need to carry on alone. Thank you for the happiness you brought to her. She so deserved the fun and great times you shared. God bring you perfect peace and God, please see Sally through her grief. Please let the sharp edges soften.
With heartfelt sympathy...Gail McNally

To all the Suter's and Sally,
I can't express how sad I was to hear of Al's passing. He was a good friend to Chuck and me for so many years. We enjoyed being with you as a family many times through the years. Tears come, but my one consolation is that Chuck and Al are buddies once again.
Love and prayers to you all,

Al Suter is like no other...He was a tremendous mentor to me, in his own way...which I learned to appreciate tremendously over the years! Al's dedication and leadership with JA has helped us become an even better organization. He was the King at getting to the point, asking the right questions, and making great things happen! Al Suter will live on through Junior Achievement!

Tough and smart on the field and a Gene Kelly on the dance floor. It was a pleasure to play with Al for two years and avail myself of his counsel, advice and humor.
See you on up the road.
My deepest condolences to Al's family. You were blessed that he was in your lives.

Dear Sally, Allison, Bradley, Christian, Bill & Suter family,
We are so sad about Al's death. We couldn't have asked for a better next door neighbor - Crystal Downs won't be the same without him! He was compassionate, offered guidance as we learned the area, and most of all was a fun loving and intelligent companion for cocktails and dinners. We will miss him! John & Mary Cheryl Hargrove

Al Suter was one of the finest football players and scholar athletes to have ever played for the Big Red. Just as importantly were his contributions to Cornell football after he graduated. His friends and teammates will never forget him. The Cornell Football Alumni Association salutes Al for his life of success on and off the field. He was a dear friend to the Cornell football family and will be forever missed.

I was a secretary at Emerson and when my boss left the company, Mr. Suter personally assured me that I would be taken care of and still have a place with the company. He was gruff and thoughtful.
