Alexander Wohler Obituary

Alexander Michael Wohler, M.D., FACS, passed away on April 17, 2024. He was a fighter to the end of his 50 years. Always learning and pushing himself to be the best cardiothoracic surgeon, while being a most devoted husband, beloved father, cherished son, precious brother, fun-loving uncle, and forever friend. Not only did he mend hearts he gave people hope and kept families whole through the thousands of surgeries he performed.

Born on August 27, 1973, Alex grew up in the quiet village of St. Paul, Missouri with his parents Bob and Pat, and his sisters Juliane, Corinna, and Rachel. After graduating from Chaminade College Prep School in St. Louis, he attended college at New York University, post-bac at University of Pennsylvania, and earned his medical degree from the University of Missouri School of Medicine - Columbia. He continued his medical education by completing a general surgery internship/residency at Georgetown University Medical Center in Washington, DC, and a fellowship in cardiothoracic surgery at The Mount Sinai Hospital in Manhattan. Nothing could stop him with his brilliance and skilled, gentle hands. He loved his interactions with patients and giving them the chance to have a next chapter in life. He always kept fighting, going full force to save a life, to keep the heartbeat of others whole.

Alex loved his St. Louis Cardinals and Mizzou Tigers. It was hard not to catch him in a Cardinals jersey or in one of his new hometown team, the Razorbacks. But his greatest loves were in the safe place of his home, in Fayetteville, Arkansas, with his beautiful and loving wife Anh, and his children Diana, Jackson, Ethan, and Maya. He lived for fun with his family - a boat ride, pool time, a game of catch. In colder days back on the East Coast, Alex would walk for blocks pulling a sled with babes on board. Would play street ball, remote cars, video games, music, snuggle, tell jokes, comfort, all the things a child thrives on and beyond. Alex loved Halloween and putting on a frightful face and would drive out from New Jersey with his young family to Long Island to trick or treat with his sister and nieces because that is what families do, he would say. A lover of music, he always enjoyed playing his guitars and singing. All by a man who worked hours well beyond the norm, 15 hours of standing at a time, always there for his patient if the phone rang and with his loved ones deeply in his heart.

A devoted servant to humanity. He gave all he had. As we move ahead with our beloved Alex in our hearts, we will be changed forever having known him and received his love, his compassion, and laughed with him.

In lieu of flowers donations in Alex's memory can be made to the Patient Based Learning Scholarship Fund at the University of Missouri Medical School. Checks can be mailed to the University of Missouri Advancement, 407 Reynolds Alumni Center, Columbia, MO 65211, or donate online at https://tinyurl.com/PBL25. This man literally saved my life, doing 5 bypasses, repairing my heart valve and two stints, he treated my mom and wife like family, hugging them and letting them know that I was in good hands. I was 98.5 % plugged , this man was the best dr i have ever met. So sorry to his family, he will be missed

Dr. Wohler saved my life back in 2015. I was 26 years old at the time and he was able to repair my heart valve. So sad to see he is no longer with us. Thank you for everything Dr. You will be missed by many.

I didn't know Alex, but your beautiful tribute says volumes. Peace and comfort to all who mourn his passing. You will never be the same as you were before this loss, but you, and the people he cared for, in his life and in his work, are ever richer for having had something so great to lose.
