Arthur Scharff Obituary

Scharff, Arthur Lister "Butch" "Bopboop"

died peacefully after having a stroke on July 26, 2022. His beloved wife Susie was with him, and his daughter Amy arrived shortly thereafter and held Arthur's hand, talked, and sang to him until his heart issued its last beat.

A warm and inviting man, Arthur never met a stranger: people were new worlds to explore, new senses of humor to engage, new hearts to open.

At 80, Arthur was still running the company he founded as a second career, Presidents Council, which enriches executives' leadership wisdom in monthly discussions of incredible depth. Prior to that, he ran Smith Scharff, a wholesale distribution business that his father started in the 1930s. But he was a salesman and teacher at heart, educating people for the purposes of both sales - which, as he saw it, is helping people - and wisdom for wisdom's sake. He passionately enlightened people not only for his companies but also for many charities and great causes. Sharing his passion, Arthur made a huge impact on his community and the world.

Arthur was a great-grandson of one of the founders of Jewish Hospital and the second rabbi at Temple Shaare Emeth; grandson of a national bridge champion and a well-loved physician known for a similarly inviting sense of humor; and son of Helen Tuholske and Arthur A. Scharff, both of whom made their mark on the St. Louis community as well. He is survived by his wife Susie (Brooks) Scharff, his sister Nancy (Scharff) Rosenstock, his son Tom Scharff, his daughter Amy Scharff, and his beloved grandson, Sander, as well as two very confused dogs.

Services: Service at Congregation Shaare Emeth on August 3 at 10:30 a.m. (masks strongly recommended). Please see the Berger website for more information.

Please consider wearing a fleece vest or sweater vest to the funeral. He would think it's hysterical.

Tributes may be made to Nine PBS, Logos School, or a charity of your choice. Visit www.bergermemorialchapel.com for more information.

I was so very sorry to hear about Arthur's passing. I wish I had known him better. He always made us laugh when he came to the clinic with Rocky. He blessed us.
God bless you with comfort in your grief. Know he will never be forgotten and always thought of fondly.
Much love,

What a pleasure it was to be Arthur's barber these past years. He took such joy in looking good for Susie!!! He was so full of stories and sharing recipes (especially soups). This is a tremendous loss for all of our lives that he touched so warmly.
I will truly miss our visits and will remember him with the gentle, kind and warm spirit he always showed to me.
My condolences to his family.

My heartfelt sympathy to the entire family as they deal with their loss. I knew Arthur through YPO and business and never met a more kind caring professional.
