Benjamin Edwards Obituary

Edwards, Benjamin F., III of St. Louis, MO, went to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus on April 20, 2009 in Naples, Florida in the presence of his loving family. He was born October 26, 1931 in St. Louis to Presley William and Virginia Barker Edwards. He attended Clayton public schools and St. Louis Country Day School, where he graduated in 1949 before entering Princeton University. There he graduated in June 1953, a week after marrying his beloved wife, Joan Moberly. After serving 3 years in the U.S. Navy, he began a career of nearly 45 years at the St. Louis investment firm of A.G. Edwards, which his great-grandfather founded in 1887. He took over as managing partner in 1965 when his father, Presley, retired. Along with several other company officers, Ben spent one weekend a month for 2 years designing the template that would steer the growth of the company into the future. Ben took the do unto others culture that was already in place and, as Chairman and CEO, developed a client-first, employee-second, shareholder-third model that became the firm's trademark. Under his capable leadership, A.G. Edwards grew from 40 offices to nearly 700, and into one of the most respected investment firms in America. Placing his trust in his fellow employees, Mr. Edwards has always credited the success of the firm to those wonderful people who loved to work for a client-oriented company in an employee-friendly atmosphere. He retired in 2001. The cancer that would end up claiming his life was first diagnosed in late 2007, but Ben lived the next 1 1/2 years with an incredibly cheerful attitude and spirit, never complaining or asking why. Knowing his time here on earth was winding down he remained strong in faith to the end, a great inspiration to those around him. He was a member of The Covenant Presbyterian Church of St. Louis, as well as many cultural, civic, and business organizations both locally and nationally. Ben believed in giving back, and through the years served on the boards of many organizations and institutions, including Civic Progress, United Way, Washington University, Barnes Jewish Hospital, SIA and NYSE. He loved his God, his family, and his country. He was faithfully committed to his Sunday School class at Covenant Church, and cherished his friends and long-time A.G. Edwards associates. Never owning a bad mood (he did not believe in them), Ben had a ready smile for everyone. He knew he was saved by God's redeeming grace, and lived at both home and in public a life of integrity, kindness, candor and joy. His heart was full of gratitude for the blessings he enjoyed. We could not have had a better husband, father, and Granddad. Mr. Edwards is survived by his dear bride of almost 56 years, Joan, and his children and grandchildren: Scott and Mary Edwards of St. Louis (Julie and Chris Seyer, Brett and Kristen Edwards, and Becca), Benjamin F. IV (Tad) and Catherine Edwards of St. Louis (Hadley and Benjamin V), Pamela and Lee Bunn of Raleigh, NC (Guthrie and Jill Bunn, Riley, and Macon), and Susan and Michael Medart of St. Louis (Griffin, Mason, and Hayden). He is also survived by his sisters Elizabeth Collins of Glencoe, MO, and Judy Bayer of Summit, NJ. He was predeceased by his parents and his sister, Connie Feager. His family is appreciative of the lavish outpouring of love, care, visits, phone calls, and cards from so many who touched his life over the years. Special thanks to his dear friends and the Vitas Hospice staff in Naples, FL for their unending help and friendship. Services: The funeral service will be held on Monday, April 27 at 4 p.m. at Powell Symphony Hall, 718 N. Grand Blvd, St. Louis. All are welcome. The family also invites anyone who wants to come visit Sunday, April 26 at the Bogey Club, 9266 Clayton Rd., Ladue from 12 to 7 p.m. In lieu of flowers, gifts may be made to Covenant Theological Seminary, 12330 Conway Rd., St. Louis, MO 63141. A service of LUPTON CHAPEL.

Dear Cousins Joan, Scott, Tad, Susan and Pam,

We feel blessed that Dad (Ott Gerstung) had so many wonderful cousins. Ben always projected a boyish look and joy. That joy was from his love for his Lord, his family and his family business! In this he was much like Uncle Pres. I have some great pictures of the cousins clowning around at Knollwood during their teenage years. Gib, Judy, Connie and Ben were quite a quartet!

Jayme, Amy and I will keep you each in our prayers during the difficult days ahead. We do extend prayers and thoughts to Gib and Judy and their families, too. Mom (Edie), Robyn and Rob all send their love. "...with man it is impossible; but not with God. With God all things are possible." Mark 10:27 He will take you through the seemingly impossible days ahead.

Blessings to all,

Teresa Kirkwood

Dear Mrs. E, Scott, Tad, Pam & Susan:

Please accept my heartfelt sympathy on the homegoing of Mr. E. He was a great man. I enjoyed working for him and hearing him sing my name in the morning time. He was so generous with his praise. I appreciate the opportunity of serving as his assistant and treasure those memories.

May the comfort of God, help you during your time of sorrow. I will continue to pray for your family,

Dear Aunt Joan, Scott, Tad, Pam, and Susan,
My sympathies are with you all as you deal with the loss of Uncle Ben. It is greatly comforting to know that he is with Jesus, completely immersed in worship and celebration. His absense is profound and I pray that you all will soon be able to embrace many of the stellar memories that you hold dear. I remember him from my childhood; he was a big tease, always kidding and smiling. Very generous and kind. May the Lord be a comfort to you in this enormous loss.

I am still an employee, though we are soon to become Wells Fargo Advisors, but it was such a privilege to work for Ben Edwards for the first 11 years of my career. It felt good to work for someone that I knew was a born-again Christian and didn't just speak the words, but lived the life. I have tried to explain to my friends who work for large corportations why we were so disappointed when the firm sold, and why we all felt like family. I just can't make them understand. It was a culture and an atmosphere that was taught to us by Ben. I remember my first day of work, August 6, 1990, when as a new Orientation group, we were taken up to Ben's office to meet him, He shook each one of our hands and had something to say to each one of us. I knew then that working at this company would be a new experience. My prayers are with your family. Be comforted in knowing that some day you will see him again. He is with our Lord right now, and has probably already heard the words "Well done thou good and faithful servant".

Dear Aunt Joan and all the family,
Our deepest sympathies go out to you during this most difficult time. Uncle Ben is a shining example of a life well lived. He always had a sincere smile and something cheerful to say to everyone. His life was a clear reflection of the love he knew in Christ Jesus, and shared with all of you. May God be very near to you, and bless you with His deepest peace.
All our love.

Ben and I met when I moved to the St Louis area in 1961. The last time we saw each other in St Louis, was at my cousin Julie Lofgreens wedding in May 1977. In June 1977 I moved to Naples to open the new Merrill Lynch office. In August Ben called and asked why I didn't join A.G. Edwards in Naples? In those years Naples was a small town and I told Ben that his brokers - 'Shaft' Gregory, Bob Price, Nancy Urfer and others had all the good customers on the books. Merrill had none and it gave me the opportunity to prospect all of Naples, such as it was in those days. As always, Ben was gracious and he wished me the best. My favorite Bible verse's are John 3. 1-13. I am so happy that Ben is now in his heavenly home because I shall see Ben again ! The Lord will watch over Joan and her family !

I have worked as the receptionist for A.G. Edwards & Sons since 1996 in Longmont Colorado. What an honor and privilege to have met Mr. & Mrs. Edwards and watching Tad take the stage to play the drums!I had my picture taken with Mr. Edwards and to this day I share it with EVERYONE I know! I was not some top producer at this function...just the receptionist and I was treated like I was part of their family! Everytime I would see Mr. & Mrs. Edwards during this function they would say hello to me and REMEMBER my name! What an amazing family! My life has truly been blessed by meeting Mr. Ben Edwards and his family! My heart and prayers are with all of you. God bless.

I am extremely proud to have had the privilege of working for A.G. Edwards. In corporate America it is almost impossible to have the culture that was at Edwards. I cannot think of anyplace that uses the golden rule as its guiding principle. It is easy to do what is best when you have a strong sense of moral values at the helm. Corporate America could learn a lot from him. Mr. Edwards truly wanted everyone to succeed. Again, it is an honor to have worked at A.G. Edwards. My deepest sympathies to the family upon your loss.

I am very proud to have worked at AGE. It is only if you worked at AGE that you would you know how proud we were to work for such a firm. Mr. Edwards fostered a culture that made you want to do the right thing - for clients, as an employee and for our fellow employees. AGE wanted us to succeed as brokers and it is an honor to have worked for such a firm.

I worked for A. G. Edwards for almost 25 years and decided to move to another firm a few years after Ben Edwards stepped down. He was a great man and truly knew the of meaning of being true to his clients and his employees. I can honestly say that working for the company during his reign was the most rewarding and enjoyable time I spent in this business. Many companies could have learned a lot from him. He touched all of us in a special way. I was most impressed by the fact that he knew your name when he may have only met you a couple of times. The world has truly lost a wonderful man and I hope his family can find peace in the fact that he left a wonderful legacy in the things his employees learned while working for him.

I was very fortunate to spend my entire 30 plus year career at AG Edwards. Most of it was under Mr. Edwards leadership. To me it always felt like a family atmosphere. Under Ben's leadership, putting the customer first and being fair resonated throughout the firm. Ben will be missed by many. My deepest sympathy to the Edwards family

To the Family of Ben Edwards, I worked for A.G. Edwards for 9 years before leaving to go to another firm when we sensed a merger coming. He was one of the most admirable men any one could ever meet. I had the opportunity to accept the invitation to sit next to him at a company dinner and thoroughly enjoyed sharing of family stories. Two weeks later I lost my son in a car accident and received a personal note from Ben along with a beautiful flower arrangement from Ben Edwards/A.G. Edward. I was so impressed that a CEO of a large company would take time to be so thoughtful, caring & considerate. I will always remember him in my heart as one of the most outstanding men in this country. I wish we had more people like him to follow in his footsteps. God Bless Your Family Cherie Oettinger

Dearest Aunt Joan, Scott, Tad, Pam and Susan,

I was deeply saddened to hear the news. Uncle Ben was one of the most wonderful men I have ever known. I have so many fond memories and I will always treasure the lessons he taught me - most importantly - to love and be faithful to our Savior, Jesus Christ. Growing up with all of you was such a special time. I will never forget the great photos of our parents in that tiny bathtroom in Williamsburg or the fun we had in Wisconsin, or walking to your house across Old Warson! Please know that our thoughts and prayers are with all of you! I love you all!

His example of how to do business by putting clients first should be a model for all to follow. May he rest in the peace and happiness of heaven.

I started to work for A.G. Edwards in 1988. During my training in St. Louis, Ben Edwards had us all for lunch. He was always humble and gracious. Over the years, I had several more opportunities to talk with Ben, and he was always the same gentle spirit. I moved into management and went to frequent meetings in St. Louis and Ben was always accesible. He always told us that he worked for us. You could dial his phone extension and Ben would often answer the phone himself.
My wife Donna was in leadership in BSF and got the chance to meet Pam. When my daughter started looking for a church in Raleigh, one of the first people to embrace her was Pam. Not until today did we realize that Ben was Pam's dad. Ben obviously imparted his wisdom and his love of the Lord to his children. Ben will be sorely missed in this new crazy world of mergers and takeovers, but I am comforted and I'm sure his family is too that we will see him again.
God's Peace,

One of the last "REAL" gentlemen of corporate business is gone. Mr. Edwards concern for the employee's at AG Edwards was legendary. One can only imagine having him as a father, brother, son or friend.

Rest well Mr. Edwards. You leave this life with a stellar record of how to treat people and how to run a large business. A job well done, very well done.
