When Carolyn and I were junior year abroad students at the Free University of Berlin we often had to repeat our last names for various ID forms. for me it was no problem - Adams was foreign enough that I simply had to spell the 5 letters, but for Carolyn, Grimm was indeed problem, German as it was. She had to trill the r again and again - Grrrrrimm, Grrrrrimm. Finally she said in German "like the brothers" and all was well.

I think of Carolyn often and miss her sardonic sense of humor and her quirky, wonderful newsletters every Christmas. She comes told every time I bake or cook and use the beautiful ceramic canisters she gave as a wedding present 53 years ago.

At my exchange-year at Knox-college I met Carolyn quite frequently- as she was quite aware of her German roots and wanted to study in Berlin for at least a year. This she did; and my girl-friend (later wife) Hilleburg and I met her very often. She visited us at home in a small town north of Hamburg over Christmas and new year; and as she, being an American, was such a charming and positive "sensation" for this little town; she had to dance into the new year for hours and hours. With little money but utmost pleasure we took her on a three-day trip to Copenhagen. What a smart..and friendly person..!!

Carolyn and I were dorm mates at Knox College and spent our junior year together at the Free University of Berlin in Germany. She was at my wedding in a Quaker chapel in Yellow Springs Ohio and we kept in touch over the last 50years. She was smart, funny and kind. I'll especially miss her witty Christmas letters.
