The following message is to replace my previous one where I stupidly spelled Charley as Charlie- PLEASE repost.
I had the honor and privilege of serving under Dean Schmitz as chair of an academic unit for many years at UMSL. Charley (as we all knew him, and as he insisted on being known) was a very successful dean as evidenced by both accomplishment and his rare longevity (compared with the averages in the academic world). He was also a wonderful mentor to many and certainly to myself. But what a remember most fondly about Charley Schmitz was that he cared most about people - he cared about you - more than he cared about all the other stuff. Thank you so much Charley.

I first met Charley through an OP ED that he wrote and was published in the St. Louis Post Dispatch. The article was about St. Louis. I was so impressed that I contacted Charley and from there we formed a bond for life in creating the organization St. Louis is a World Class City.
We spoke (mostly Charley spoke) to over 100 organizations in promoting St. Louis and how if we were one city instead of over 100 small municipalities we would be the seventh largest city in the US and how our crime rate would immecdiately fall to one of the safest in the country.
Charley loved St. Louis and the state of Missouri. More than anything, though, he loved his beautiful wife Liz. He was a champion and he will be missed.
