I remember Curt from about 20 something years ago... My dad worked at Curt Smith's and Curt would always come in and deliver or pick up with his blue bag with a 'stop' sign on the end. I was about 5 or 6 and that was my first introduction to someone with a disability. He gave me candy. I moved away and returned a few years later as an adult and there he was like, well, clockwork :) Curt is essentially immortal as long as we keep him in our thoughts.

My first memory of Kurt was at 313 on Main St., I think it was called The Down Town Abbey at that time though. I was not old enough to get in, but managed to anyhow. I cant remember what band was playing but I remember Kurt. He was doing some sort of shuffle dance right up front. From then on I saw him all over town. I always smiled and said hello. I never knew his name or even asked. I wish I would have.

What a legacy Curt was to his beloved Belleville! How wonderful that the people in Belleville recognize and appreciate that they had a special citizen known as Curt. The fortunate ones are those whose lives were touched by Curt. He will be remembered for many years by the clock. Perhaps for some he will even be introduced through the clock. As new people move to town I am sure they will be told countless stories about Curt and how the clock came to be...What a wonderful tribute for such a delightful person.
Hugh & Linda I thank you for allowing me the priviledge of meeting Curt. I am one of the lucky ones. To the entire Weisenstein Family thank you for sharing Curt with an entire community. I offer my heartfelt sympathy to each of you.

I grew up in Belleville, on East "A" St, and seeing Curt walk all over my neighborhood is one of my earliest memories. When I was older and working downtown, he always stopped into the Chicken Ranch or 3-1-3 back in the day to say HI, offer up an errand, or just chill and listen to the music. He was a kind soul who will be greatly missed.

I moved away from Belleville about 12 years ago. I always enjoyed seeing Curt when I came back to visit my family. I told friends here in Arizona how he was such a big part of the small town charm of Belleville. He was always around and it was like I never left! I remember him coming in to ask me if I needed lunch or any erronds run when I had my first job at a shoe store downtown. And then in later years enjoying the music and nightlife at different bars or functions. Coming home won't be quite the same anymore without Curt. I will really miss seeing him watch over downtown Belleville even though I'm sure he still is watching!

I just moved to Belleville a year ago and i didn't know curt, But I managed to see him time to time downtown. Now, reading these stories,I know now what I missed this past year.I am mad at myself for not getting to know Curt. Wouldn't this make a great movie? A movie celebrating Curts life and how he made us all know that life is precious. God bless...

Curt was a great guy. Everybody knew and loved him. The last time I saw Curt was about six weeks ago. I was sitting outside of Mosaics on Main when I heard a voice from behind me say,"Are you ready for "wrastling" tonight? Don't forget it comes on early this week!" After a brief conversation about pro wrestling and the new construction on Main St.,Curt (as he would) turned and walked away picking up litter off the sidewalk. He was smiling and so was I. Curt was a gentle soul in a cruel world. He touched everyone who knew him in a unique, positive, and enlightening way.

I loved seeing him at all the rock shows, relaxed in a chair, eyes closed as if he were asleep, nodding his head and tapping his foot to the beat. I love seeing him walking around taking care of Belleville as if it were his very own. And last year I was so excited to see him as the Grand Marshall in the Belleville Catholic Schools Parade. Heaven will be very tidy for us when we get there. Thanks Curt!

I first met Curt at 313, where he would come nightly for a glass of water and listen to music. When I would see him clapping his hands and bopping around by the dance floor, it was like experiencing the truest joy in music.
Curt was a heaven sent reminder of the purest kindness and simple pleasures we too often forget in life. May his family and friends find comfort in the many lives he touched, in the biggest and smallest ways. He will be missed.

Curt-You were such an awesome guy! I am very glad that I got to see you at the clock dedication last year, it had been many years since I had talked to you and I was glad to get the chance. Over the years I heard many stories from dad about the things you said or did, and I always could tell how much you meant to him and the city, and how much he respected you for your awesome personality. Thanks for putting up with him and thanks for all the stamps, you always got us the best looking ones there were! You will be missed!!

Curt we know you've gone to much better place but still we are saddened by the loss of your friendly face. Wow, a ledgen is gone. But will never be forgotton. I do remember him allways danceing and hanging out where all the "cool" people hung out, which was very fitting, because he was a very sweet gentelman. And very popular with all of the regulars in Belleville. That drawing that was posted on my MySpace about Curt getting into heaven and walking made me chuckel. For a soul that would never turn the other cheek, but in turn would allways great you with a warm hello, it is sad to see him gone, but at least we know now, that the streets he is walking, are lighted by all the warmth and love only heaven could give. Rest in Peace Curt.

As far back as I can remember (when we were kids) we would always see Curt walking around Belleville and my grandpa would always tell us, "theres goes ol Curt." He was always friendly and kind and helpful. And he loved to dance. My kids were always excited if we ran into him while visiting my grandma at the Meredith Home. When learning of his death, my children were overwhelmed with emotion. My Dad and I as well. I completely agree with the statement, "Curt wasnt disabled, the rest of the world is."
In the last couple of days MySpace.com has been a buzz with news of his passing (amongst the local teenagers that knew him from uptown.) He will truely be missed. God bless you Curt.

The number of entries in this book is a testement to the man! If everyone looked at the world the way Curt did, it would be a better place. When I worked at Huntleigh Securities on South High Street he would come in the door and check our clock...then one day I heard a horrendous noise, looked out the window and saw Curt had been hit by a car. It seems like it was the second time it had happened in a short period of time. I immediately called 911 and got an ambulance coming but before that the Belleville Police Dept. had come to assist. It took him awhile, but he recupterated from that accident and after that time, wore the orange vest...yes, downtown Belleville will never be the same...A simple man who made so many people happy...God bless him!

To Curt's family, I am so sorry to learn of his passing. I was the manager at Nice Twice in the 90s and I remember seeing him walking up and down Main street several times a day. His energy always inspired me to keep going even when I was tired. He would come in the store once in a while, but we never had anything for him to deliver, so he would just go on. He will be missed by eveyone who works on Main St. May God continue to bless this family. Gail Joyner

Belleville will never be the same again, can't count all the times I'd talk to Curt walking down East Main St. while I'm shopping, he was a very fun person to be around, had a great sense of humor all the time, would go into St. Louis Bread Company and get him his asiago cheese or cinnamon bagel, good times there! I know I'll miss him, as will all the other people he has come to know over the years doing what he liked to do. Take it easy, big guy!

To Don, Kent & Hugh,
You have our deepest sympathy.
Kurt has been a part of our extended family for more than 25 years. He was a truely remarkable person. He made the most of what he was granted of life. He and so many like him are often taken for granted. Kurt took little for granted. He was a friend to anyone who showed him friendship. He was very devoted to these friends.
May we all learn a little more patients and understanding from knowing such a wonderful person.

Kent, Joan, Debbie, & Rick
Although we never got to know Curt well, he was as much an icon of downtown as the fountain. There wasn’t a time we were downtown, that we did not see Curt running errands, pulling weeds, sitting at one of the local bars, or dancing at one of our many Fests. We’ll never forget the night we were at the old 3-1-3 when the most awful head-banging band started screaming away. After 20 minutes or so of that torture, we had to escape, but there was Curt sound asleep in a chair directly in front of the speakers. He never even flinched. Belleville has lost its timekeeper and guardian angel. Our sympathy.

I remember seeing Curt about a week ago hanging around by the stop light waiting for the lights to change. He used to be a constant presence in my life when I remember him sitting and picking up trash and pulling weeds all through Belleville. I would hang out with friends at the Ground floor. I can still remember him sitting and nodding to the music of the local bands and always smiling his approval. I will miss him and our talks we use to have in between bands at the shows we went to. But mostly I will always remember him being Curt. Simple, loving Curt who loved Belleville and all its residents with all of his heart.

CURT...a name so well known by any true Bellevillian! I knew Curt almost my entire life....from a child growing up knowing we would always see him when we went for a stroll in the car in downtown Belleville..often times hoping that he would not walk out in front of our car...but if you knew Curt and you knew downtown...you were always watching out for him. A man with such a smile and an unmeasurable heart...I remember all the events downtown and watching Curt dance continuously as the music played...and a big hit with the ladies he was! He is truely a gift from above that was sent to us to show us the beauty of life...he was Belleville's angel..and yet so many of us on the outskirts knew him all too well...for I am a lifelong resident of Mascoutah, IL. My mother currently works at the Meridith home where Curt lived and told me all about the many many friends, family, and loved ones pouring in to visit Curt one last time before his journey to Heaven....and Heaven will be an even brighter and cleaner place with Curt. Curt will be missed!

One day, as I was taking my son to get his haircut at Boeving Shop, my son picked up a beer bottle in the grass and carried it in to throw it away.
Jim or Bill, I can't remember which, laughing made the comment, to the effect of "A little Curt". My son, Logan does not know what a huge compliment that was.
Curt was a simple man, with a huge heart, an enormous smile, and he touched many lives unknowingly.
He will be missed by all who knew him and who knew of him.

Curt will always be remembered as the perfect example of a good person.
I remember working at my office on East Main probably around 1986 when Curt came crawling down the sidewalk when he lived on N Oak with his parents. He had fallen and hurt his leg. I called his brother Kent to come get him, and while waiting, had my first opportunity to find how wonderful of a person he was. Heaven will be a better and even cleaner place.

I work at a law firm in Belleville. Earlier this Summer I looked out of our window and saw Curt across the street on the sidewalk. I thought he had fallen. When I started to cross the street, he got up. It was then that I realized he was pulling weeds out of the cracks in the sidewalk. He really cared about Belleville and will be sorely missed.

Curt will be missed by all. A lamp light of Belleville has gone a little dimmer-May he shine in our hearts forever. He was a character to say the least if you saw him on the streets or at the Octoberfest he was always in a good mood and ready to talk to anyone and his laugh was contagious. He was a friend to all and an enemy to none. He was a big part of downtown Belleville.

When I first met Curt I wasn't sure of him but I got to know him and he was the nicest guy in the world. You will be greatly missed!

Dear Curt: I can't say I knew you.I can say that I almost ran over you twice. Once by The News Democrat and once by the Post Office. I thank the Lord I didn't. I can tell from the outpouring here, you were quite a guy. I cant remember not seeing you in Downtown.
When I was a child , my grandmother took me to the dime store counter to eat the red jello and whip creme that she called ruby jewels. As a kid, you were hard to understand until my grandma told me how special you were. You were a wonderful contribution to the social fabric of Belleville, I didnt ignore you, just gave you a wide berth as you always seemed to be headed somewhere...... with a purpose. When you cut in line, I never minded. Many of us come and go without ever making a contribution. You, Curt, will be missed.
For now, tears fill my eyes as I read your eulogies. With a little time, I will think about you and smile.Because I know, God has a special place for folks like you.

Ever since I was a little girl, when my mom managed the old Pie Pantry, Curt was a part of my life. He would come in and be amazed everytime my mom told him I was her little girl. I also became acquainted with Curt while working at the Lincoln Theater as my first job. He became an expected presence for me during my years of growing up and working in downtown. To all of Curt's Family and close friends... I am happy to have known such a wonderful man. My first job at the Lincoln Theater was the first time I had met Curt, and he has been in my pryers and thoughts ever since. Though that was a long time ago, I have fond memories of himm dancing in the streets at all of our festivals and walking up and down Main St. every day.... Just seeing him brought a smile to my face... He will be sadly missed by all that ever knew him. God Bless.

My uncle, Curt, tried to teach me many small lessons through my life as he would "stroke my back like I was a golden retriever", (I love that analogy, Michelle!) but the greatest lesson I learned from Curt was this weekend. The art of human kindness is thriving in Belleville. The outpouring of care, concern, and Curt stories by friends and family took us from tears to laughter and back again.
The two angels and dear friends that transported Curt to his next life taught me so much about unconditional friendship.
The definition of family was intensified as I observed so many selfless acts in caring for someone very ill.
I'll always hear Curt's voice in the chiming of his clock as it rings throughout his beautiful city - Belleville.

I agree Belleville has lost an ICON. Curt Weisenstein was known by all of us Bellevillians as simply "Curt." He was written about in our newspaper he was easily spotted on Main Street any given day. I've known him my entire life he was always on main street and always talking to someone. I'll miss him each time I'm downtown but never forget him. God bless the Weisenstein family you have a crowned jewel walking main street in Heaven.

Isn't it amazing how much impact a simple but kind person can have on a community? Curt didn't have all the tools that most of us are blessed with but still found a way to make our lives brighter. We'll miss you very much Curt. May God bless you abundantly!!

Dear Weisenstein Family,
I will truly miss Curt! He never knew a stranger -- and always made the most out of life. We could always count on him leading the dance at the festivals. I'll always remember him coming into Ben's Antiques to check on our clocks. He was truly a special person. May God provide you comfort.

I never met Curt, but his brother Kent told me many times about his wonderful brother and how lucky he was to have such a great person to be around. I have a brother who is a teaher that I am very proud of. Wouldn't it be nice if everybody we think of brought a smile to our face.
