Darrell Drissell Obituary

Drissell, Darrell

April 4, 1959 - August 19, 2025

Darrell N. Drissell, born on April 4, 1959, passed away peacefully on August 19, 2025, after a 12-year battle with cancer, leaving behind a legacy of love, kindness, and cherished memories. Darrell, a devoted husband, father, son, brother, uncle, cousin, friend, and respected dentist, touched the lives of many through his warmth and good humor.

He is survived by his beloved wife of 41 years, Kathy (Jostes) Drissell, with whom he raised three wonderful children: Andrew (Alexandra) Drissell, Megan (Bradley) Jones, and Jeffrey (Chelsea) Drissell, who continue to uphold his values and spread his spirit in their own families. Darrell also took great joy in being Pappy to his adoring grandchildren: Lawrence, Fiona, Olivia, and Owen.

Darrell was the son of Ruth (Crowe) Drissell and the late Norman Drissell, brother to Dave (Teresa) Drissell, Dan (Debbie) Drissell, Diane (Ken) Knierim, Don (Tracy) Drissell, and Debbie (Jeff) Powell, son-in-law to Elizabeth (Barbeau) Jostes and the late Merle Jostes, and brother-in-law to Mark (Jane) Jostes and Susan (Tom) Ebeling. He was deeply loved by many other family members and friends who will miss him dearly.

Darrell earned a Bachelor of Science in Biology from Missouri State and a Doctor of Dental Surgery from the University of Missouri – Kansas City. He proudly practiced dentistry for 40 years, and was adored by his patients for his compassion, professionalism, and gentle nature.

His love of life was evident in his many hobbies and pastimes, including his involvement with the Boy Scouts of America as an Eagle Scout and scout leader, his years playing, coaching, and watching sports, his deep appreciation of music and theatre, his love of ice cream, and his passion for the outdoors and for travel. There was truly nothing Darrell loved more than taking trips with his family and friends – whether driving an RV to visit National Parks, exploring the history, sights and food of Europe, or enjoying cherished sunsets on Captiva Island.

Darrell and his easy smile will be greatly missed by his family and friends, but they take comfort in his unwavering faith in Christ and life eternal.

A celebration of his life will take place on October 4th, 2025, at 10:00 am at The Crossing at Grant's Trail (2760 Union Rd, St. Louis, MO 63125). The family encourages those who attend to wear green, in honor of Darrell's favorite color.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Siteman Cancer Center (in memory of Darrell for sarcoma research), the National Parks Conservation Association, or the National Park Foundation.

We would be hard pressed to find a higher quality person & family. Loved doing church activities/sports with him at Green Trails UMC as kids, Boy Scouts, and even having him knock my teeth around. Heaven will be getting a truly great addition.

I worked for Darrell as a substitute while their receptionist was out. He was the kindest man, and he knew I hated doing the math sheets that were used back then, so he took them home and did them! I´m so sorry to hear of his passing.

Dr. Drissell was a kind & compassionate dentist who went above & beyond for his patients. While I was privileged to be one of those for fewer years than I´d have liked, we discovered many things in common, including our names, high school alma maters, names of our sons, & mutual friends. I am so very sorry for your loss. He will be deeply missed.

I had several visits scheduled with Dr. Drissell a few years ago. I do not know how we got started talking about rock music, but I remember telling him the first rock album I bought was Iron Butterfly´s "In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida" back when I was a sophomore at Michigan State University in 1968. He exclaimed, "So was mine!" He went on to tell me that when he was 10 years old, he and his brother loved that song and bought it! Of course, he immediately found it on his phone and played it for all of us. We had such a good time! I certainly had the best dentist in the world. I will never forget him and will always miss him.
