David Wimsatt Obituary

Wimsatt, David M.

October 28, 1963 - July 5, 2025

David M. Wimsatt (Dave), 61, recently passed away after a courageous battle with mental and physical illnesses. Dave was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph and Francine Wimsatt. He is survived by his five siblings and their spouses: Ann Wimsatt & David Williams, Patrick Wimsatt, Casey Wimsatt & Sara Pinkel, Chuck Wimsatt & Mary Cunningham Wimsatt and Ellen Wimsatt Browne & Mike Browne. He was a loving uncle to Catie & Tim O'Keeffe, Sawyer Williams & Melanie Matsuo, Colleen & Andy Everding, Walker Williams & Katie Barcay, Charlie Wimsatt, Emma Wimsatt, Teagan Browne, Rebecca Wimsatt and great uncle to Seamus & Frank O'Keeffe, Kirin & Ronan Williams, Mary & Molly Everding and he was a friend to many.

Dave was born in St. Louis, Missouri and spent most of his life there. Growing up in University City, he loved playing soccer and competitive diving. He graduated from St. Louis University High and then Marquette University, with a BA in Journalism. He received several awards at graduation, including Best Writer. He completed internships with the City of Milwaukee and the Milwaukee Journal. In addition to writing, Dave also enjoyed playing guitar and photography, both as an art form and in the service of photojournalism. Dave worked for various newspapers early in his career. He later made the transition to working as a database analyst at Scott Air Force Base, Saint Louis University and other firms. More recently, Dave was self-employed as a data visualization specialist. Dave had a huge laugh and loved to joke (and draw clowns) with his nieces and nephews. He and his brother Chuck enjoyed many memorable breakfasts and lunches over the years at their favorite spots in St. Louis.

Services: There will be a private family burial followed by a Celebration of Life. If desired, memorial contributions may be made to the Independence Center (https://independencecenter.org/support/) a community-based rehabilitation program for adults dealing with mental illnesses in the St. Louis area.

The last time I saw David was circa 1988/1989 when he and Casey came to LA for a conference. My mom and I met them for dinner in Pasadena. I will never forget David´s pure shock, joy, and deep laughter (in that order) when he realized there was such a thing as BBQ chicken pizza on the menu. It was this midwestern boy´s first introduction to what likely seemed then like really crazy California food. (Which he or Casey just had to order.) May we all remember David´s laughter and simpler times. I am so sorry for your loss.
