Deirdre Smith Obituary

Smith, Deirdre O'Meara 61, of Dataw Island, South Carolina, wife of The Honorable Gerald Monroe Smith, died Saturday morning, January 26, 2008, at Beaufort Memorial Hospital. Born in New York City, she was a daughter of the late Thomas F. O'Meara and the late Mary Veronica Meehan O'Meara. Mrs. Smith was a communicant of St. Peter's Roman Catholic Church. She graduated cum laude from Trinity College with a BA, from the University of Virginia with a M.Ed, and received her Juris Doctorate degree from the University of Missouri. Mrs. Smith was a retired attorney and court administrator for the Missouri Court of Appeals Eastern District. She was a board member and newsletter editor of the Beaufort Art Association and served as President of the Dataw Island Owner's Association. Mrs. Smith was the current president of the Dataw Island Club and a former president of the Boys and Girls Club of Beaufort. She served on the Missouri Client Security Trust Fund Board (1991-95), and was chairperson of that board (1995-96). Mrs. Smith was a member of the Bar Association of Metropolitan St. Louis where she served on the Executive Committee (1988-96) and as president (1994-95). She was a member of the St. Louis Women Lawyers Association where she served on the board of directors (1989-94) and as president (1992-93). Mrs. Smith was a member of the American Judicature Society where she served on the board of directors, executive committee and as president (2001-03). She was listed in Who's Who of American Women, Who's Who of American Law, and Who's Who in America. Surviving are her husband, Judge Gerald Monroe Smith of Dataw Island, South Carolina; two sons, Dr. Thomas B. Ahr of St. Louis, Missouri, and Andrew T. Ahr of Miami Beach, Florida; one brother, Dr. Thomas O'Meara of Lakewood, Washington; two grandsons, Matthew Ahr and Brian Ahr, and one daughter-in-law, Christine Ahr.Services: A Memorial Mass will be held at 12:00 p.m. Friday, February 1st in St. Peter's Roman Catholic Church in Beaufort, SC conducted by The Reverend Father Christopher Smith. A private Inurnment will be in Beaufort National Cemetery. There will be a reception at 2:00 p.m. in the Carolina Room at the Dataw Island Club. In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting memorials be made to the Boys and Girls Club of Beaufort, 17 B. Marshellen Drive, Beaufort, SC 29902 or a charity of your choice. COPELAND Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
